Devon Sams, also known by his rank as Ensign Sams and referred to as the night pilot, served as the night-shift pilot aboard The Liliana (Airship), a vessel associated with Baron Theodore von Monocle.

Overview

Sams held the rank of Ensign and was assigned to the night watch as pilot of The Liliana (Airship). He was a member of the Liliana Crew.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, Devon Sams was on duty at the helm of The Liliana (Airship) when an attack by Giant Bats struck the vessel. During the ensuing crisis, Sams was described as very nervous, yet he responded with remarkable speed, spinning the wheel and adjusting levers and gauges with what the narrator characterized as amazing speed. He managed to partially stabilize the ship during the crash landing, ultimately bringing the vessel down in the sand.

Following the incident, both the narrator and Lieutenant Colwell praised his conduct. Lieutenant Colwell addressed him directly:

"Ensign Sams, you did well."
