Giant bats were large, human-sized bat creatures that attacked the airship Liliana before its desert landing, swarming the vessel in a colony and causing significant damage to its turbines and deck before being repelled by the crew.

Giant bats were large bat creatures approximately the size of humans that were encountered by the crew of The Liliana (Airship) during the events of The Blood of Giants. The creatures struck the ship in a colony, causing considerable structural and mechanical damage before the crew drove them off.

Description

Giant bats were described as large, dark masses in flight, roughly equal in size to a human being. Their wings bore a resemblance to the gliders used by The Nightmen. They possessed strong bones—strong enough to stop the Liliana's turbines—and extended talons capable of seizing a person and lifting them off a ship's deck.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, the Liliana flew into a colony of giant bats during a night passage prior to the ship's desert landing. The creatures collided with the turbines, the mess, and the bridge walls, and some became caught in the propeller blades. The weight of bats lodged in the propellers threw the ship off balance, and their bones proved strong enough to halt the turbines entirely. Animal particulate and blood from the creatures was later found inside the turbine shaft.

During the encounter, at least one giant bat extended its talons toward the narrator and another seized her cape, lifting her off the deck. Lieutenant Colwell shot one of the creatures in the course of the battle.

Following the engagement, the bodies of the giant bats were pushed overboard and the deck was cleaned. Zaira von Monocle was noted to be fatigued from the effort of dealing with the creatures. The attack was referenced afterward as "dealing with those giant bat creatures."

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, giant bats are described as "creatures the size of men with leathery wings." The sourcebook records that they attacked The Liliana (Airship) mid-flight and that the damage they inflicted to the forward turbine was severe enough to force an emergency landing in the Artacala Desert.
