Matthews held the rank of Ensign and served in a variety of capacities during the events depicted in The Fight for Rislandia, including guard duty, damage assessment, and communications between the bridge and the ship's battle stations. Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, Ensign Matthews was the first crew member assigned to guard the protagonist when she was confined to quarters aboard The Liliana (Airship).

Following an explosion during combat, Matthews came to the bridge to report damage. Upon arriving, his face turned ghost white at the sight of Commander Colwell crumpled on the floor. He reported that the Wyranth Empire had blown a hole clear through the back of the ship, and also confirmed that Rhys was still alive. He was subsequently dispatched to locate Dr. Estrella du Clockhand to attend to the wounded Commander Colwell.

Matthews later returned to the bridge to report that the cannoneers were ready, after which he was sent back to his battle station.
