Wyranth Empire

The Wyranth Empire, also called the Iron Empire, is a militaristic autocracy occupying the southern Iberanth Peninsula, ruled by the Iron Emperor Ivan IV and long at war with the neighboring kingdom of Rislandia, known for its conscript armies enhanced by the addictive Giant's Blood Serum, its relentless campaigns of conquest including the full-scale invasion of Rislandia City, and its eventual uneasy alliance with Rislandia against the Nightmen.

Wyranth Empire

Wyranth Empire

The Wyranth Empire — also referred to as the Iron Empire or simply "the Wyranth" — occupies the southern portion of the Rislandia-Wyranth Peninsula, a land of volcanic mountains, red deserts, and rugged coastlines. Much of the empire's territory is uninhabitable, though its population has swelled due to newfound industry. The empire was once a poor agrarian country that progressed into the Industrial Age under Ivan the Iron Emperor's rule. Ruled by the Iron Emperor, the empire is a centralized autocracy with a long history of conflict with the neighboring Rislandia kingdom, sharing the peninsula with Rislandians since the first people crossed over the mountains and settled it. It has been described by those who have faced it as ferocious, oppressive, and lacking compassion, and its soldiers have been characterized as attacking relentlessly and almost mindlessly. The Wyranth army has been described as coming in numbers James Gentry could hardly fathom, and the empire has been called far more dangerous than goblins.

Geography

The empire is bounded by the Border River to the north, the Golgmarsh Ocean to the west, and Lantern Bay to the east. Key geographical features include Devil's Mountain, The Great Desert, and an industrial heartland. The capital city is situated with foothills — and a mountain range — behind it and lies near Devil's Mountain; industry within the capital produces smoke that is visible from a distance, partially obscured by Devil's Mountain. Earthquakes are noted to be more frequent in the capital than elsewhere in the region. The empire formerly bordered the Tyndree Kingdom to its northeast, which it subsequently conquered and absorbed.

The empire's territory includes rolling hills and several small villages along the road into its interior. A southwestern coast lies past The Great Desert. The empire also has major cities along the southern end of its peninsula, eastern farms, and a desert on the western side described as less habitable than much of Zenwey. Plainsroad Village is noted as not being geographically close to the Wyranth Empire, making the empire's incursions into that region particularly alarming to Rislandian observers. The empire also operates an iron mine set between two hills, used in part as a serum production facility. Carnait Cove lies within the empire's territory.

Government

The Wyranth Empire is an imperial autocracy ruled by the Iron Emperor, whose name is considered blasphemy to utter among the empire's own people. The emperor's full name is Ivan IV. He is served by a council of advisors including the Chancellor, War Minister, and Intelligence Minister, as well as a joint chiefs and council of strategists, a state department, and a chief historian. Imperial law holds that an empress is second only to the emperor; at the time of the events of For Steam and Country, the empire had no lady empress or heir. All able-bodied men are conscripted at age 17.

The empire was founded by Tyran The First, its first emperor, and maintains a Wyranth royal lineage. The Iron Emperor Ivan has stated that the empire prioritizes culture alongside military strength, describing the Wyranth as a people of culture. The empire devotes significant resources to its military, leaving civilians on rations. Citizens are sometimes ordered to house soldiers. A strict population — possibly subject to a curfew — lives under the watch of automatons deployed on city streets and informants who root out dissent. The empire maintains a secret police that recruits children with aptitude as spies and operates spy training programs. Soldiers who distinguished themselves have been granted lordships and property rights for their service. The empire also possesses horseless carriages.

Military

The Wyranth Military is a large force comprising infantry, cavalry, scouts, commandos, motored vehicles, artillery, and siege engines. Soldiers are identifiable by their dark uniforms and shiny silver helmets with points atop them. They carry rifles and pistols and are known to carry torches, lanterns, and gas lamps during night operations. Wyranth patrols often range out for two or three days at a time. The empire has generals managing war efforts.

A distinguishing physical trait of Wyranth soldiers is their dilated eyes, which move with inhuman speed — a characteristic linked to the empire's use of Giant's Blood Serum, referred to internally as Vitality Ether. All soldiers are administered this serum, which is clearly addictive; prisoners deprived of it go into violent fits. In The Steam Knight, the serum was described as bizarre, fueling the Wyranth's crazed war, and was noted to have been administered to soldiers of the first through fifth legions to boost their capacities. Soldiers go berserk without the serum supply, and feral serum addicts attack allies and enemies alike, with serum-withdrawal delirium causing roving soldiers to behave like rabid packs.

Spoiler: The Crystal Conspiracy

This section reveals events from “The Crystal Conspiracy”.

In The Fight for Rislandia, the Wyranth military demonstrated expanded mechanized capabilities, including motored vehicles that move on treads, a Steam-Powered Rotary Gun vehicle deployed in street combat, smoke bombs used for battlefield confusion, snipers positioned on rooftops, and barricades erected in city streets. Thousands of soldiers in dark uniforms with metal helmets were fielded during the assault on Rislandia City, with dozens of machines of war assembled at the city.

In The Iron Wedding, the empire was noted to be developing mechanized units in Nyanzi — described as a sizable investment — and to have been developing a Wyranth aerial fleet on the Isle du Mystere, where gunboats were also stationed. As part of the armistice negotiations, Wyranth engineers were to be given access to The Crystal Spire, and a new aerial vessel was planned to carry a joint Rislandian and Wyranth crew. The empire also maintained an automaton brigade. In The Steam Knight, the empire was noted to be developing mechanized units using Dr. Metzengerstein's power systems.

Corporal Fox and Sergeant Darminder Babington both had battle experience on the front lines of the war with the Wyranth.

The Giant's Blood Serum and Devil's Mountain

Spoiler: The Crystal Conspiracy

This section reveals events from “The Crystal Conspiracy”.

In The Blood of Giants, the empire lost most of its serum reserves when Devil's Mountain was destroyed. As a result, soldiers across the empire began suffering from addiction and withdrawal, causing them to run rampant and behave erratically. Attacks on the Border River grew "not only more frequent, but more erratic," and soldiers were no longer as disciplined or formed as in past encounters. Some soldiers remained in units but pressed the attack under addicted generals. The Iron Emperor himself acknowledged that the empire was on the verge of collapse. Rhys later developed an anti-serum that cured the giant's blood addiction.

In The Fight for Rislandia, the Wyranth had apparently found a new supply of the giant's blood serum, with a prisoner interrogated by Baron Theodore von Monocle's men indicating the vicinity of Plainsroad Village as the origin of the current serum supply. The empire was operating a serum production facility at the Wyranth Iron Mine. Soldiers under the serum's influence were described as ferocious and aggressive, and some were referred to as "mutants" for ingesting giant's blood. The empire's prior border attacks had been almost random, but with the new serum supply their strikes became precise once more. It was noted that the Wyranth advance could break down without the serum supply.

In The Iron Wedding, it was noted that Wyranth soldiers suffer from addictions that giant's blood may help cure.

In The Steam Knight, the serum was again referenced as fueling the Wyranth's crazed war, administered to soldiers of the first through fifth legions. Soldiers deprived of it were described as going berserk, with feral addicts attacking allies and enemies alike.

The Gretoria Asylum held three prisoners suffering from the same blood-serum condition as Marina du Willet.

Culture

Wyranth society values obedience, efficiency, and cultural achievement. The empire maintains a rich arts scene, including the Wyranth Opera House and Imperial Museum. It is, however, described by Matthias du Gearsmith as "not known for their civility," and by Zaira von Monocle as oppressive and lacking compassion. Much of the empire's territory is uninhabitable, though its population has swelled due to newfound industry. Rislandians are generally not kind to those associated with the Wyranth, reflecting the deep animosity between the two nations.

The empire was once a poor agrarian country that progressed into the Industrial Age under Ivan's rule. The Wyranth capital features an industrial district built outside the original city walls with a newer stone wall enclosing it, as well as the Wyranth Opera House, the Wyranth War Factory, and the Wyranth Palace. The capital is described as a city embedded in the foot of a mountain, with tall pointed buildings and walls and streets made of stone.

A Wyranth Underground Resistance operates within the empire, formed by people who were starving badly under imperial rule. In The Iron Wedding, the resistance was noted to have attempted a martyrdom gambit outside Carnait Cove.

History

The Wyranth Empire was founded by Tyran The First, its first emperor. The Wyranth and Rislandian peoples have been at odds since the first people crossed over the mountains and settled the large peninsula. The empire has a long record of military aggression. It conquered the Tyndree Kingdom and absorbed it into the empire before turning its focus on Rislandia. The empire assassinated King Malaky XV, an act recorded on the Assassination of King Malaky XV page. It razed Portsgate to the ground and opened war on multiple fronts.

A period of relative peace followed, but in the 15th Year of King Malaky XVI's reign the empire grew aggressive again. The 2nd Wyranth War began in the 16th Year of King Malaky XVI's reign. The Wyranth invaded Rislandia during the 19th year of King Malaky XVI's reign. The empire subsequently invaded Rislandia after Zaira von Monocle traveled to the Zenwey Continent. During the 20th year of King Malaky XVI's reign, James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern went on a mission into Wyranth-occupied territory.

The empire's threat has been described as analogous to the dangerous threat Great Jerohm faces from the north. In The Steam Knight, it was noted that the Wyranth had betrayed King Malaky XVI after he offered a solution, and that top-ranking Wyranth officials had met with Dr. Metzengerstein in Loveridge. The empire was also rumored to have obtained airship design plans from the crashed Liliana.

Role in For Steam and Country

In For Steam and Country, the Wyranth Empire served as the primary antagonist nation. At the time of Baron Theodore von Monocle's log, Rislandia's Grand Rislandian Army was dealing with a budding crisis at the Wyranth border, and Wyranth soldiers had already crossed into Rislandian territory. The empire had conquered the Tyndree Kingdom and pushed across the borders into Rislandian territory, eventually occupying Rislandia's northern provinces.

Wyranth forces attacked Plainsroad Village with a legion of soldiers and mobile artillery, leveling nearly all of it. They also attacked the Gentry Family farm with mobile artillery and infantry, with hundreds of soldiers marching from the east. Large numbers of Wyranth soldiers scoured the countryside searching for The Liliana after it launched from Loveridge.

Three of the five airships of the Liliana's caliber were destroyed in skirmishes with the Iron Emperor's forces on the border. During an aerial engagement — noted as the first airship-versus-airship battle — the Wyranth possessed or captured an airship used to attack the Liliana; Wyranth soldiers boarded the Liliana during the battle, though the Wyranth airship was ultimately sunk by the Liliana's cannons. The Wyranth were described as unskilled at aerial combat.

Baron Theodore von Monocle was captured by the Wyranth and held prisoner in the dungeon of Wyranth Castle, situated beneath the castle's throne room. Zaira von Monocle and Talyen von Cravat were also imprisoned there. The rescue team procured a dozen Wyranth soldier uniforms from the airship attack to use as disguises. Sending a team into the heart of the Wyranth Empire was considered a risk, as it could give the Iron Emperor the fuel needed to legitimize his invasion.

Hundreds of Wyranth soldiers were stationed at the base of Devil's Mountain and fanned out through the forest to intercept the Liliana's crew during the assault on the mountain laboratory. Marina du Willet was revealed to have been working with the Wyranth as a spy.

The empire's army swarmed the capital city during the crew's escape. A large bomb was used during the infiltration of the Wyranth capital, and a giant took over the narrator's mind at the capital during that mission.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, the aftermath of Devil's Mountain's destruction left the Wyranth Empire in severe internal crisis. Soldiers suffering from serum addiction and withdrawal ran rampant, and the empire's previously tactical precision gave way to erratic, animalistic aggression — Heather noted that Wyranth soldiers sounded like animals. Attacks on the border grew more frequent and more erratic, and the empire's artillery demonstrated the capacity to take down whole buildings quickly.

The empire opened war on two fronts simultaneously: one along the western coast and one along the Oler Mountains on the border with Atrebla. A feint was used to deploy Rislandia's army along the Border River. The Wyranth would not accept an occupying Rislandian force within their borders.

James Gentry referenced rescuing Zaira von Monocle from the Wyranth dungeon in conversation with Queen Reina I. Marina du Willet's prior association with the Wyranth continued to affect how Rislandians regarded her. The Gretoria Asylum held three prisoners suffering from the same blood-serum condition as Marina.

Following the events of The Blood of Giants, the empire became allied with Rislandia against The Nightmen threat, and the giant's blood addiction among Wyranth soldiers was cured with Rhys's Counter-Serum.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, the Wyranth Empire launched its most ambitious offensive against Rislandia, advancing on Rislandia City in a formation described as a trident: one force moving up the western coast, a second pushing inland through the middle of the country, and a third advancing from the east. The full might of the Wyranth army was described as approaching the gates of Rislandia City within hours of the story's opening war room meeting, with the forces only a few days' march away at that point.

The Wyranth had apparently secured a new supply of giant's blood serum — traced by a prisoner to the vicinity of Plainsroad Village — and their strikes, previously erratic following the destruction of Devil's Mountain, had become precise once more. The empire was operating a serum production facility at the Wyranth Iron Mine, where some personnel wore uniforms and others wore coveralls as workers. Coded papers were found on their persons, including references to Project Walking Monster.

The Wyranth had infiltrators and spies embedded within Rislandia City's population. These spies fired on The Liliana from rooftops as it departed and sabotaged the primary weaponry creation facility. The empire had also been spying on the Rislandians at Cliffside Castle.

During the Battle of Rislandia City, Wyranth forces broke through the southern city gate, flooded through the gap where the gates had been, broke through the first barricade, and spread into the city. Thousands of soldiers in dark uniforms with metal helmets participated, supported by dozens of machines of war. The Wyranth deployed a Steam-Powered Rotary Gun vehicle in the streets, used smoke bombs for confusion, positioned snipers on rooftops, and erected barricades in the middle of streets. Artillery pieces fired on The Liliana during the engagement. A bomb dropped from the Liliana created a large hole in Wyranth ranks, but the forces did not retreat. A dying Wyranth soldier claimed the kingdom was theirs.

Wyranth forces controlled Portsgate and the south of Rislandia and had occupied Rislandia City by a later point in the narrative. Wyranth soldiers scattered at the sight of the Liliana in at least one engagement, and in a chapter 15 log excerpt, panicked from an explosion in the sky and retreated back to Desert Watch.

The Wyranth also ransacked Zaira von Monocle's childhood home, possibly searching for airship secrets, and a Wyranth caravan was spotted east of her home.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, the Wyranth Empire remained at war — or in a state of uneasy conflict — with Rislandia following the events of The Fight for Rislandia. The empire had razed farmland, Shellville, and Portsgate during its advance, employing scorched earth tactics rather than holding captured areas. It had cut Rislandia City's aether fuel supply as a consequence of the invasion. The empire occupied Loveridge and acquired southern lands from Rislandia. Wyranth soldiers were described as stalking Rislandians: "the Wyranth kept us on our toes, their soldiers stalking us."

The empire sent an ambassador, Andrei Zelezo, to Rislandia City. Andrei claimed to have come from the Wyranth capital and proposed an armistice with significant territorial demands. He also possessed intelligence on The Liliana and met with Marina du Willet to verify airship plans. Andrei Zelezo was later revealed to be Ivan the Iron Emperor himself, disguised by a Changeling Net.

The empire was developing mechanized units in Nyanzi — described as a sizable investment — and had been developing a Wyranth aerial fleet on the Isle du Mystere. As part of negotiations, Wyranth engineers were to be given access to The Crystal Spire, and a new aerial vessel was planned to carry a joint Rislandian and Wyranth crew.

Within the empire itself, Zaira von Monocle operated under a mission requiring her to return to the Wyranth capital after four days in Rislandia City. She noted that "Coming to the Wyranth Empire had flipped my whole world upside down." Ivan told her, "Your mere presence is changing the Wyranth Empire." The capital city featured an industrial district built outside the original city walls with a newer stone wall enclosing it, as well as the Wyranth Opera House, the Wyranth War Factory producing automatons on an assembly line, and the Wyranth Palace. Automatons were deployed throughout the capital's streets.

The Wyranth Underground Resistance operated within the empire during this period, and the empire's informants worked to root it out. The resistance attempted a martyrdom gambit outside Carnait Cove. During a Nightmen attack, Wyranth soldiers evacuated civilians and fired on Nightmen fliers, reflecting the ongoing alliance — or at least cooperation — against that common threat.

At ceasefire with Rislandia by some point in the narrative, the empire's status remained complicated by the territorial demands of the proposed armistice and the continued presence of Wyranth forces in formerly Rislandian lands.

Role in The Steam Knight

In The Steam Knight, the Wyranth Empire continued its role as the primary antagonist force threatening Rislandia. Wyranth soldiers had overrun the Gentry Family farm, killing James Gentry's parents. The empire's army had been making substantive advances toward Rislandia City and was described as being at the gates of the city, coming in numbers the narrator could hardly fathom.

The Wyranth had found out Rislandian troop movements through the treachery of Lou (Knight of the Crystal Spire), who informed them of Rislandian troop positions and was noted to have Wyranth associates. Marcus (Wyranth Spy) was revealed to be a Wyranth spy operating within Rislandian circles. The empire had also been spying on Rislandia through other embedded agents.

Two Wyranth assassins were encountered in the forest near the king's lakeside retreat, with the goal of killing King Malaky XVI — their stated aim was "to take the king's life and end this farce once and for all." One assassin carried a pistol and one a sword. One assassin was killed by James Gentry, having been struck in the head by Queen Reina I's rock first. The Wyranth were described as being everywhere Rislandia turned. An assassination attempt by a separate party — Handley's — was initially suspected to be connected to the Wyranth but appeared not to be.

A Wyranth soldier who had been stationed at the palace recalled that the Iron Emperor had personally ordered the guards not to touch the "von Monocle girl" (evidently Zaira von Monocle, whom the Wyranth had held at their palace). The Wyranth had occupied Rislandia City before being driven out but still held much of Rislandian land, including Loveridge, where soldiers were stationed. Top-ranking Wyranth officials had met with Dr. Metzengerstein in Loveridge, and the empire was developing mechanized units using Metzengerstein's power systems.

James Gentry had previously undertaken a mission into Wyranth territory as an apprentice, traversing the hills into Wyranth territory alongside Cid, the two pretending to be civilians as they crossed the countryside. This was described as among the most frightening moments of James's life. Baron Theodore von Monocle had been gathering intelligence on the Wyranth, and his rescue from the Wyranth capital's prison was referenced. The empire was rumored to have obtained airship design plans from the crashed Liliana. Wyranth soldiers wore uniforms that Ethan von Lantern and James also wore as disguises during operations in Wyranth-held territory. Wyranth war contraptions made a clacking sound, and soldiers pursued James and Ethan through the forest during their mission.

Spoiler: The Crystal Conspiracy & The Steam Knight 2

This section reveals events from “The Crystal Conspiracy” and “The Steam Knight 2”.

On the world map

On the official world map, the Wyranth Empire is the green southern half of the Rislandia-Wyranth Peninsula, with a city dot near its centre. A line divides it from Rislandia to the north. Lantern Bay lies to its east and Nyanzi across the water to its south-east. The map does not mark the Great Desert, Devil's Mountain or the capital by name.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, the Wyranth Empire is situated in the world of Areth on the Iberanth Peninsula, occupying the southern portion alongside Rislandia. The sourcebook frames the empire's entire history through the lens of its founding schism from Rislandia, tracing it from a band of refugees to one of the most powerful states in the known world.

Founding and the Figure of Wyranth Ashenblade

According to A History of Rislandia, the empire was not founded by Tyran The First but rather originated with a man named Wyranth Ashenblade, one of the co-leaders of the original refugee exodus alongside Jory Malaky. The sourcebook describes Wyranth Ashenblade as holding a vision of rebuilding civilization based on strength and order, believing that the weak need the strong to survive and that leadership must be absolute. He stood beside Jory during the Day 25 speech to rally the refugees and ruled jointly with him as co-leader of the first settlement.

The split came when Wyranth Ashenblade argued against sharing limited supplies with newly arrived desperate refugees — a position Jory Malaky rejected. Declaring he could not follow Jory, Wyranth Ashenblade took approximately 3,000 followers — described as mostly soldiers and pyrean survivors — and departed southward over the Westerly Spine, settling on the southern side of the Border River in a harsh, volcanic region. According to the sourcebook, this settlement, founded in Year 73, is what would eventually become the Wyranth Empire. The bible further identifies the founders as southern Atreblan refugees who rejected Rislandian rule, and states that Atrebla is the ancestral homeland of the Wyranth people.

The sourcebook notes that the early Wyranth settlements grew into a confederation of city-states by the reign of King Malaky III, united under Wyranth Ashenblade's descendants, and were described as militaristic and disciplined. These city-states mined volcanic regions for iron and crystals and built fortifications along the Border River.

Unification Under Tyran

According to A History of Rislandia, the city-states were formally unified into the Wyranth Empire in Year 267 by Emperor Tyran the Unifier — referred to on the known page Emperor Tyran the Unifier (Wyranth) — making the empire approximately 600 years old at the time of the novels. The sourcebook thus presents Tyran The First not as the empire's founder but as its unifier, centuries after the original founding by Wyranth Ashenblade. The novel-based account on this page lists "Founded By: Tyran The First," which the bible contradicts by attributing the founding to Wyranth Ashenblade (Year 73) and Tyran's role as unifier of pre-existing city-states (Year 267).

Conquest of Tyndree

The Tyndree Kingdom was conquered and absorbed into the Wyranth Empire in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign, per the novels' timeline.

Wars with Rislandia

The sourcebook describes five major wars between the Wyranth and Rislandia over approximately 500 years. Key events recorded include:

  • The Wyranth-Tyndree War (Years 115–120), fought against Tyndree and ending in stalemate.
  • The Border River Conflict, in which Wyranth forces crossed the Border River and claimed lands on the northern bank, establishing permanent enmity with Rislandia.
  • A seven-year grinding conflict with Rislandia (Years 175–182), ending with the Treaty of Lake Bethany in Year 182.
  • The First Wyranth War, beginning in Year 337 when Wyranth forces attacked Pleasant Pass; they were pushed through Pleasant Pass before being repelled by airship bombardment.
  • The Fantasy War (Years 375–383), beginning in Year 375, when the Wyranth discovered ruins, artifacts, and crystals beneath Devil's Mountain and launched an invasion with crystal-enhanced weapons.
  • The Wyranth War of Years 437–442, beginning in Year 437 when the Wyranth accused Rislandia of violating a crystal research ban and launched a pre-emptive strike; Wyranth forces were pushed back and agreed to recognize Rislandian territorial claims in Year 442.
  • A massive three-pronged invasion launched in the 25th year of King Malaky XV's reign, emboldened by new mobile artillery and anti-airship weapons, during which Wyranth agents assassinated King Malaky XV; Wyranth forces were ultimately driven back across the Border River.
  • The 2nd Wyranth War (in the novels' timeline), defined by the sourcebook as a war of conquest, featuring serum-enhanced soldiers and culminating in the destruction of Devil's Mountain; the sourcebook states this war effectively ended after the giant's destruction.

The sourcebook also notes that Loveridge has changed hands between Rislandia and Wyranth over a dozen times.

Society and Government

According to A History of Rislandia, the Wyranth Empire has no formal aristocracy; all citizens are theoretically equal before the state. This is a notable detail not present on the novel-based account on this page. The sourcebook describes the empire as a highly organized, disciplined society where the state is supreme — industrial, militaristic, and culturally sophisticated, prizing order, efficiency, and excellence.

The sourcebook further states that the empire provides free education, free healthcare including geothermal baths, and free cultural events to citizens — a dimension of Wyranth civic life not mentioned on the novel-based account on this page.

The empire values strength, culture, discipline, innovation, conquest, and beauty, and uses the Red Desert as a military training ground.

Geography (Additional Details)

According to A History of Rislandia, the empire is bounded not only by the Border River to the north and the Golgmarsh Ocean to the west, but also by the Eastern Sea to the east and south, and by the Westerly Spine through its western portion. The sourcebook also references the Wyranth Mountains as a geographic feature and notes that they feed rivers into Lake Bethany. The empire controls the southern bank of the Border River and the southern entrance to Pleasant Pass.

Military and Navy

According to A History of Rislandia, the Wyranth possess one of the most powerful navies in the known world, headquartered at the Eastern Port. The empire also maintains an industrial complex on Isle du Mystere producing automatons and airships.

The sourcebook records that during the Second Wyranth War (novels' timeline), the Wyranth launched a massive two-front invasion: one along the western coast destroying Portsgate, and one threatening the capital via the Oler Mountains. It also confirms that General Swift was the Wyranth commander during the occupation of Rislandia City.

The sourcebook further states that the Wyranth found a second giant after the first was destroyed, and developed Project Walking Monster as a consequence.

Folklore and Cultural Mythology

According to A History of Rislandia, the Wyranth people maintain their own distinct versions of widespread Areth legends, which differ meaningfully from Rislandian tellings:

  • In the Wyranth version of the Golgmarsh legend, Golgmarsh is a hero who climbed the mountain to steal fire from the sky-gods and bring it to mortals; his fall is framed as a sacrifice, and earthquakes are said to be his spirit still fighting to break free and complete his mission.
  • In the Wyranth version of The Goblin in the Well, Elara kills the goblin and becomes a hero.
  • In Wyranth versions of The Dragon's Hoard, becoming a dragon is considered a reward rather than a punishment, representing strength and immortality.
  • In Wyranth versions of the Mira and Tam story, the Fae is portrayed as a villain and Mira kills her to break the bargain.
  • In Wyranth versions of the Cottage in the Woods story, the were-creature is portrayed as a tragic figure — cursed, not evil.

Current Status per the Sourcebook

According to A History of Rislandia, the empire is currently recovering from war with Rislandia, facing the Nightmen threat, and in alliance with Rislandia — an alliance described as deeply unpopular among members of the Wyranth Underground Resistance. Wyranth Imperial forces form part of a joint military command with Rislandia. The giant's blood addiction among soldiers has been cured with anti-serum distributed across the empire. The resistance movement remains active but weakened.
