Nightmen Arena

The Nightmen Arena was a large amphitheater situated within the cavern city of the Nightmen. It served as the primary venue for gladiatorial combat and was considered one of the city's most cherished festivities by its inhabitants. Matches held there were fought to the death, typically pitting human slaves against Nightmen fighters before crowds of cheering spectators.

Description

The arena was constructed as a bowl of concrete, featuring several lines of raised platforms arranged for spectators. Below these platforms lay a soft dirt pit floor where combat took place. The structure was lit by lampposts positioned above the seating areas, and cheers from the crowd were said to echo through the entire cavern during events.

A mechanized platform equipped with gears and pulleys allowed the officiator to be raised into the air above the arena floor, from which announcements could be made — the officiator's voice was noted as blaring through the stadium. Luxuriously appointed viewing boxes, decorated with silk cloths, were reserved for councilmen and their guests.

Dozens of Nightmen stood guard at the arena's entrances at all times. A gated area connected the main structure to a large pod-shaped building. The arena also featured high walls or a domed roof, as a glider was described as barely clearing the top of the arena wall during the events of The Blood of Giants.

Facilities

Behind the arena proper stood a dedicated facility building. Its front room served as a lounge where fighters could rest, converse, and clean their weapons between bouts. The facility also contained sleeping quarters for arena fighters. A large tunnel connected this rear facility to the arena floor itself.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, the Nightmen Arena featured prominently as a site of forced gladiatorial combat. Human slaves were made to fight Nightmen fighters before hostile crowds. The text noted that "the crowd was hostile, and the Nightman was bigger, more ferocious," underscoring the brutal and unequal nature of the matches.

During a notable incident, a glider entered the arena space; the crowd initially roared with approval, believing the intrusion to be part of the spectacle. Guards and armed attendants from the arena's ceremonies subsequently flooded onto the floor in response. The glider barely cleared the top of the arena wall during the escape, and cheers from the arena echoed through the entire cavern as events unfolded.
