In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, the Broken Islands were historically known as the Far Northern Islands, with "the Broken Isles" being one of the later names applied to the archipelago.
Names and Aliases
A History of Rislandia records two additional names associated with the islands: Astara, identified as one of the larger individual islands in the group (see Astara), and the Clockmaker Isles, a name given to islands within the archipelago where time is said to flow strangely. The relationship between "the Clockmaker Isles" as described here and the separately mapped Clockmaker's Isle is not clarified by the sourcebook.
Geography and Character
The sourcebook describes the Broken Islands as a scattered archipelago in the far northeastern seas. Some islands have frozen coasts. The sourcebook notes the islands are too remote for regular contact, and that few who have visited have returned. Occasional sailors report sightings of the islands but typically avoid landing. Strange phenomena are recorded, including time distortions and disappearances.
Inhabitants
Contrary to the novels' characterisation of the islands as "mostly unexplored," A History of Rislandia states that small human populations exist on some of the islands, and that these populations developed unique, isolated cultures over time. The sourcebook further notes that some islands remained uninhabited and were claimed by the Fae Oslan.
