Great Bridge
Overview
According to A History of Rislandia, a land bridge or chain of islands connected Zenwey to the southern continent. Known in later ages as the Great Bridge, this geographic feature held a central place in the earliest recorded movements of the Giants, providing — or at least appearing to provide — a traversable route between Zenwey and the lands to the south. Whether it was a single continuous land bridge or a close-set chain of islands navigable by the Giants' great stature remained a matter of interpretation even among ancient sources.
Origins
The precise nature of the Great Bridge's formation was disputed in antiquity and has never been resolved to scholarly satisfaction. A History of Rislandia records two principal traditions:
- The natural formation theory: Some held that the Great Bridge was entirely natural in origin, shaped during the Great Shaping when the world itself was being formed. Under this view, it was simply a consequence of the land as the creator left it.
- The Giants' construction theory: Others claimed that the Giants themselves raised the bridge deliberately, using earth crystals to lift islands from the seafloor and create a passable route southward. This tradition credits the Giants with a degree of crystal-working mastery consistent with other accounts of their capabilities during the Age of Giants.
Neither account is confirmed by the text of A History of Rislandia, which presents both as competing traditions rather than established fact.
Role in the Age of Giants
Whatever its origin, the Great Bridge served as the route by which the Giants crossed from Zenwey to explore the southern continent. The Age of Giants saw these beings range widely across the known world, and the Great Bridge represented the southern limit of their documented expansion. No further detail about what the Giants encountered or accomplished on the southern continent is recorded in the available notes from A History of Rislandia.
Fate
The ultimate fate of the Great Bridge is as contested as its origin. According to A History of Rislandia, some accounts whispered that the bridge was destroyed during the Great Sundering, sinking beneath the waves and leaving in its place only a treacherous shallow sea. If this tradition is accurate, no navigable remnant of the original crossing survived into later ages. The text presents this fate as rumor rather than confirmed history, and no authoritative account is cited to settle the question.
Legacy
The Great Bridge, whether natural wonder or feat of Giant engineering, stood in later tradition as a symbol of the ancient world's lost connections — a time when the continents were more accessible and the Giants moved freely between them. Its possible destruction in the Sundering placed it alongside other casualties of that cataclysmic event, lending the bridge an elegiac quality in the historical imagination of Areth's peoples.
