Shadow Crystals
Overview
Shadow Crystals, known in older texts by the name Umbraeth, are among the rarest forms of crystal found in the world of Areth. According to A History of Rislandia, they were formed directly from the essence of a divine or primordial being during The Great Sacrifice, and they carry an enduring association with concealment, darkness, and mystery. They are most closely linked to the Shadowkin, who employed them as a cornerstone of their practices.
History
According to A History of Rislandia, Shadow Crystals came into existence as a consequence of The Great Sacrifice, the foundational cosmological event in Rislandian creation lore. The source states: "Umbraeth became the Shadow Crystals, granting concealment and mystery." This account places their origin at the very beginning of the world's history, tying them inseparably to the being or force called Umbraeth, whose essence was transformed into the crystals themselves.
The Shadowkin were the primary civilization to make use of Shadow Crystals, incorporating them into their culture and craft. The crystals were not widely distributed across Areth; their extreme rarity and the remote nature of their natural deposits ensured that knowledge of them remained limited outside of those communities with direct access.
Description
Shadow Crystals appear in one of three colorations: black, dark purple, or smoky gray, as described in A History of Rislandia. Their appearance reflects their nature, each hue suggesting depth, shadow, and obscurity.
The crystals are found exclusively in deep caves and underground ruins, environments that mirror the darkness they embody. Their occurrence in such locations contributes to their scarcity; they are considered very rare even among those who know to seek them.
Properties and Uses
Shadow Crystals grant their users power over concealment, darkness, and illusion. Documented applications include rendering persons or objects invisible, generating or manipulating shadows, and hiding people or objects from detection. These properties made them valuable tools for any who required stealth or secrecy.
The Shadowkin were the principal users of Shadow Crystals, and their society and capabilities were shaped in part by access to these stones. The crystals' powers align closely with the nature attributed to Umbraeth in the creation account preserved in A History of Rislandia.
Legacy
The dual name of these crystals — Shadow Crystals in common usage, Umbraeth in older or more scholarly contexts — reflects the direct link between the physical object and the divine essence from which they were said to spring. Their extreme rarity meant that their influence, while significant among the Shadowkin, did not extend broadly across Rislandian or wider Arethan civilization in the way that more accessible crystal types did.
