Crystal Magic

Crystal Magic was the ancient magical system of Areth, rooted in crystallized fragments of the Firstborn's divine essence that granted power over specific elements; most commonly employed through machine assistance in the modern era, it could also be wielded through sheer willpower by those of Giant's blood lineage.

Crystal Magic

Crystal Magic was the ancient magical system of Areth, rooted in the belief that crystals were fragments of the Firstborn's divine essence, scattered across the world when they sacrificed themselves during the Great Shaping. Each crystal type granted power over a specific element, and together they were said to hold the fabric of reality itself.

  • Ritual Magic: Ancient knowledge, mostly lost.

When a crystal was activated through willpower, it required the will of the user to initiate and could produce an energy feedback dangerous to the user's psyche. In The Iron Wedding, Dr. Metzengerstein was working on a solution to protect against this feedback.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, an earth crystal played a central role in experiments conducted by Ivan and Zaira von Monocle. The crystal was a brown, jagged rock approximately the length of a palm and the width of two fingers, with several dents in its surface. Ivan had carried it in his pocket for months, turning it repeatedly as a nervous habit, and had been attempting to sense resonance from it during that time.

As Zaira described it: "It was a brown piece of rock, and I would have never noticed anything special about it without Ivan telling me about its properties." The crystal stayed cool despite the warmth of their skin and initially produced no vibration perceptible to Zaira, though Ivan could sense a resonance from it.

The crystal had been recovered from the wreckage after Rislandians detonated a bomb within the mountain. Ivan used it to power a crystal machine, in which it was placed with two pieces of metal forming a circuit. When Zaira's psychic energy interacted with it through the machine, it produced enormous destructive force, causing the cave walls to shake and collapse. The crystal glowed when activated.

Ivan and Zaira also attempted to activate it jointly through willpower alone, holding hands over it. When Ivan focused his will, the crystal warmed and became red hot, vibrating in their hands. Together they caused the ground to split and sink, demonstrating the synergy between male and female users. However, the experiment created an energy feedback that proved too much for Zaira's psyche. Dr. Metzengerstein was working on a solution to protect against this effect.

Zaira's father separately sought intelligence agents to find an earth crystal for Harkerpal to test. The crystals were also connected to the airship plans that Rislandia needed, and Ivan declined to explain their full purpose to Zaira until she became empress. James Gentry was unaware of the crystals, having been absent during the relevant briefing.

In A History of Rislandia

A History of Rislandia provides substantial historical context for crystal magic that extends and in some cases complicates the account given in the novels.

Origins and Nature

According to A History of Rislandia, crystals are "fragments of the Firstborn's essence, scattered across the world when they sacrificed themselves during the Shaping" — broadly consistent with the novels, though the sourcebook adds several properties not discussed in the fiction. Crystals are described as remnants of divine beings rather than natural minerals, and the text is explicit that they cannot be created, only discovered — a point with direct bearing on Malaky XIII's later failed experiments (see below). The sourcebook further states that crystals respond to willpower, emotion, and intent, and that those with Giant ancestry can attune to them more easily, corroborating the novels on both points.

The sourcebook adds a range of hazards and side-effects not foregrounded in the novels: overuse or damage can cause crystals to lose potency; crystals can crack or explode if overloaded; prolonged use creates addiction; multiple crystals can interfere with each other; crystals can warp a user's mind or body; failed use causes physical harm; and using crystals attracts evolved giants, Fae, and dragons. The psychic feedback noted in The Iron Wedding is described in the sourcebook more broadly as feedback visions or emotions from past users.

The sourcebook also states that crystals lose power and must be recharged, and that they can be found in ancient ruins — details not addressed in the novel-based account on this page.

Ancient Mastery and the Great Sundering

According to A History of Rislandia, crystal magic was wielded by mages of the ancient Shattered Empire "with unequaled mastery." It then "ceased to function during the Great Sundering," before eventually returning to the world in a weaker and less understood form. The sourcebook attributes the rediscovery of crystal magic in Rislandia specifically to the reign of King Malaky XV.

This account differs in emphasis from the novel-based account on this page, which frames the historical peak as the era of Kudi the Great and describes a "purge of magic from the world" as the cause of decline. A History of Rislandia instead names the Great Sundering as the event that caused crystal magic to cease functioning entirely, and locates the ancient mastery in the Shattered Empire rather than specifically in Kudi's era.

The Fantasy War and Depletion (Years 375–383)

The sourcebook provides a detailed political and military history of crystal magic's modern resurgence. According to A History of Rislandia:

  • In Year 375, Wyranth discovered functioning crystals beneath Devil's Mountain.
  • In Year 376, Rislandia discovered its own functioning crystals in the Crystal Spire.
  • Both sides immediately raced to weaponize crystal magic during the Fantasy War: "The race was on to weaponize crystal magic."
  • By Years 378–379, both sides had exhausted their crystal reserves. Magic began failing again as crystals were depleted or broken.

This sequence provides a precise historical framework for the near-absence of crystal knowledge in the era of the novels.

The Treaty of Greenhorne and Its Violation

According to A History of Rislandia, the Treaty of Greenhorne included a specific agreement to limit crystal magic research — a provision that shaped Rislandian policy for generations. However, Malaky XIII quietly resumed crystal research between Years 400 and 418 in violation of the treaty. His programme had two goals: creating new crystals (which failed, consistent with the sourcebook's statement that crystals cannot be created) and developing crystal-powered devices, in which he achieved limited success.

Known Locations and Lore

The sourcebook records several specific claims about crystal locations and associated factions:

  • Fire crystals are rumored to be inside an active volcano.
  • The Nightmen possess crystal mines.

Ivan's Obsession

A History of Rislandia notes simply that Ivan, the Iron Emperor, "is obsessed with crystals" — a characterisation consistent with his portrayal in the novels, where he frames crystals as ancient technology and pursues them across continents.
