Single-Man Fliers

Single-man fliers are personal flying mechanisms developed by Harkerpal and his team. Unlike conventional airship technology, these devices are designed to carry a single individual in flight, drawing inspiration from the Nightmen Bat Gliders observed on Zenwey.

Overview

Single-man fliers represent an experimental branch of Rislandian aviation technology distinct from crewed airships such as The Liliana. Because they are not airships, they fall outside the command structure familiar to airship officers; in The Iron Wedding, it was noted that Zaira von Monocle would not be able to command one.

Development

In The Iron Wedding, Harkerpal described the Rislandian project as nearly complete, stating: "We're very close to completing work on single-man fliers based on my observations of the bat gliders we saw on Zenwey." The design was directly informed by Harkerpal's firsthand study of the Nightmen Bat Gliders encountered during the Zenwey Expedition, adapting principles observed from that indigenous Nightmen technology for Rislandian use.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, Harkerpal reported to colleagues that his team was on the verge of completing the single-man fliers. The devices had not yet been deployed or tested in the field at the time of the novel. Their development signaled an expansion of Rislandian aerial capability beyond conventional airship technology.
