Airship Technology
Airship technology was the pinnacle of Rislandian engineering—a closely guarded secret that combined ancient crystal magic with industrial steam power to achieve controlled flight. Operated by the Grand Rislandian Air Force, these craft served as the backbone of Rislandia's aerial military capability, fulfilling roles ranging from reconnaissance and troop deployment to direct combat and bombardment. As stated in The Steam Knight, Rislandia was "the only kingdom to be able to fly around the world," and its leaders—King Malaky XVI and Matthias du Gearsmith—refused to share the technology with any foreign power in order to preserve that strategic advantage.
Principles of Flight
Airship flight depended on the interaction of two core systems:
- Air Crystals: Generated anti-gravity fields that counteracted the vessel's weight, providing lift.
- Steam Engines: Powered turbines and propellers, providing thrust and maneuverability.
- Fuel: Vessels ran on aether fuel (a refined petroleum-like substance) or coal.

Capabilities
- Aerial reconnaissance
- Rapid troop deployment
- Bombardment from above
- Commando insertion via rope ladders
- Long-range travel, including circumnavigation of the world
- Psychological warfare (inspiring fear in enemies, hope in allies)
Limitations
- Vulnerable to anti-airship artillery (see Wyranth Anti-Airship Artillery)
- Limited fuel range
- Dangerous in storms
- Required 50 or more trained crew members
- Constant maintenance needed
- Extremely difficult to produce; King Malaky XVI could not rapidly expand the fleet
Combat Tactics
- High-altitude bombing
- Strafing runs
- Diversionary attacks
- Commando deployment behind enemy lines
Notable Vessels
- The Liliana: A wooden-hulled airship named after Liliana von Monocle. See also How Baron Von Monocle Named His Airship. In The Steam Knight, this vessel—described at one point as "the only airship in the world"—was captained by Zaira von Monocle and transported James Gentry to Rislandia City. It was noted to be traveling down the western coast at the time intelligence was passed between Lou and Marcus. A previous voyage James recalled featured a crew that drank tea and beer.
- The Kerli: Destroyed in service.
Role in The Steam Knight
In The Steam Knight, airship technology occupied a central diplomatic and strategic role. Foreign powers—including Atrebla and agents acting for King Eakin of Atrebla—sought to acquire the technology, while Rislandia's leadership refused all such requests. James Gentry arrived in Rislandia City aboard the airship captained by Zaira von Monocle, and he reflected that future armor might one day allow knights to fly as airships did.
