Overview

According to A History of Rislandia, The One is the supreme divine being at the foundation of Rislandian creation belief. He existed before time itself, dwelling beyond the Void in perfect solitude. The sourcebook states that "The One, in His infinite nature, desired to share existence, not from need, but from love" — a distinction the text treats as theologically significant, emphasising that creation was an act of generosity rather than necessity.

The One is known by several names across the cultures of Areth. The title the Great One was used by certain human cultures who, according to A History of Rislandia, had forgotten His true nature; this name is also associated with the Church of the Great One. He is additionally referred to as First Light and the Creator.

The Act of Creation

According to A History of Rislandia, The One initiated creation by speaking: His voice became the First Song, and the First Song became reality itself. This account forms the basis of the Song of Areth creation myth.

Following the establishment of reality, The One created the Firstborn — beings intended to serve as His instruments — and gave them the task of shaping the world. Critically, He also granted the Firstborn the gift of free choice. He then commanded them to make the Great Sacrifice.

The sourcebook further records that "the One had seeded the world with other peoples" beyond the Firstborn and the Giants. These peoples, referred to as the Second Children, were smaller and different from the Giants, and each was shaped by the lingering influence of the Firstborn. The page for the Second Children covers these peoples in greater detail.

Legacy and Worship

According to A History of Rislandia, some human cultures came to refer to The One as the Great One after forgetting His true nature. The Church of the Great One bears this title and represents the primary institutional expression of faith in The One within Rislandia during the era of King Malaky XVI.

The One's act of creation — the speaking of the First Song, the fashioning of the Firstborn, and the seeding of the world with the Second Children — underpins the cosmological and religious framework described throughout A History of Rislandia, including the events of the Great Shaping and the Great Sacrifice.

Notes on Sources

All information on this page derives from A History of Rislandia, which presents this material in the voice of an in-universe scholarly historian. The text does not assign dates to the acts of creation, as they are described as occurring before time itself existed.
