Viridian
Overview
According to A History of Rislandia, Viridian — commonly called the Green City — was a city of approximately 400,000 inhabitants situated in the southern jungles of the region that would later be known as Rescall. It stood as the foremost center of healing and medicine within the Orethan Dominion and served as the permanent headquarters of the Lifewardens.
Description
According to A History of Rislandia, Viridian was built in deliberate harmony with its jungle surroundings, described in the text as featuring "tree-cities and hanging gardens." Rather than clearing the jungle, its builders integrated living trees into the city's architecture, producing elevated residential and civic structures woven among the canopy. Hanging gardens adorned these structures, reflecting the city's deep association with botanical knowledge and the life sciences.
The city was home to healing temples, botanical gardens, and institutions dedicated to life-extension research, all of which reinforced its identity as the empire's preeminent site of medical and biological learning.
History
According to A History of Rislandia, Viridian flourished as the seat of the Lifewardens during the era of the Orethan Dominion. The city's healing temples and botanical gardens drew scholars and the sick alike, and its life-extension research represented some of the most ambitious intellectual endeavors of the age.
The city's fortunes changed irrevocably with the Night of Shattered Crystals. According to A History of Rislandia, the Lifewardens "scattered into the jungle" during that catastrophic event. In the months that followed, many were hunted down, though a few survived by retreating to hidden sanctuaries. The fate of Viridian itself in the aftermath of the Fall of Oretha is not detailed in A History of Rislandia.
Legacy
The dispersal of the Lifewardens from Viridian marked the end of the city's role as a center of organized healing knowledge within the Orethan world. The hidden sanctuaries to which a remnant of the order retreated preserved some portion of Viridian's medical and botanical traditions, though the extent of that survival is not recorded in A History of Rislandia.
