W.S.S. Adventurer (Steamship)
The W.S.S. Adventurer was a military steamship belonging to the Wyranth Empire. It operated in the southern waters off the Wyranth Coast and was capable of navigating to Carnait Cove harbor. The vessel's name reflected a broader Wyranth cultural tradition of naming ships after inspiring ideals rather than after individuals, a practice that stood in contrast to Rislandian custom. As the narrator observed in The Iron Wedding: "The Wyranth preferred to name their ships after inspiring ideals rather than after people like we did in Rislandia."
Description
The Adventurer was a two-decked vessel. The lower deck housed crew quarters, while the upper deck contained a mess hall and a pilot's cabin situated above and at the center of the ship. A pilot house sat atop the upper structure. Toward the rear of the ship, a large steam stack and paddle box provided propulsion. The Adventurer was armed with cannons positioned on the upper deck, covering arcs to the sides, front, and rear of the vessel, reflecting its role as a military craft within the Wyranth Military.
Role in The Iron Wedding
In The Iron Wedding, the Adventurer traveled the southern waters off the Wyranth Coast and navigated to Carnait Cove harbor. During the events of the novel, an assassin attempted to reach the quarters of Ivan, the Iron Emperor aboard the ship. At the time, Ivan was traveling under the disguise of the ambassador "Andrei Zelezo," concealed by a changeling net.
Naming Conventions
The Adventurer's name was consistent with Wyranth naval tradition. The Wyranth Empire favored naming its ships after inspiring ideals, a convention that distinguished Wyranth vessels from those of Rislandia, where ships were more commonly named after people.
