Rislandia City

Rislandia City, also known as Malaky City, is the capital of the Rislandia kingdom, built around the Crystal Spire and serving as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the nation. It is the seat of King Malaky's Palace, home base of the Knights of the Crystal Spire, and a central location throughout the For Steam and Country series.

Aliases: Malaky City, the capital

Rislandia City is the capital city of the Rislandia kingdom and its political, economic, and cultural heart. Built in concentric circles around the Crystal Spire, the city grew from a small settlement of Atreblan refugees into a bustling metropolis of approximately 50,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the kingdom. It is also referred to as Malaky City, particularly in older or formal contexts. The city is smaller than the capital of the Wyranth Empire. Rislandia City is described as lying far north, a location once thought to be beyond the reach of Wyranth forces. The city is surrounded by hilled countryside, and a river runs near the road north of the city. The city serves as a hub for all of Rislandia and even the Atrebla kingdom beyond, with traders coming from all over the world to its marketplaces. James Gentry described it as the shining beacon of hope of Areth.

Description

Rislandia City is organized in concentric circles radiating outward from the Crystal Spire. Its streets are paved with cobblestone and lit by gas lamps on main roads at night. Horseless carriages and people on horseback are common sights in the city. The city contains markets, taverns, a palace with a large war room and decorated walls, a dungeon, an airship landing strip, scientific research laboratories, and residential apartment buildings. The Gretoria Asylum is also located within the city. City guards and, during wartime, the Grand Rislandian Army maintain order in its streets. The city also contains the Grand Rislandian Army headquarters and the knights' barracks and courtyard.

The airship landing strip is located a five-minute walk from King Malaky's Palace, requiring passage through the city streets. The Crystal Spire itself has a landing pad for airships beside it, its lights illuminating the city, and it serves as a grand beacon visible from a great distance — from the air, after some distance, the city is visible only as a faint outline of the Spire on the horizon. The balcony of the palace looks out toward the Crystal Spire on one side and down upon the rest of Rislandia City on the other.

The city lies at least a three-day ride west of Plainsroad Village and is much larger than that settlement. The road from Portsgate leads to Rislandia City. Springtime in the city brings a cool breeze from the northwestern Oler Mountains.

The city possesses a northern city wall bordered by a long river originating in a lake to the northwest, forming a defensible northern edge that requires a bridge to cross. It also has a western city wall, a western gate, a northern gate, a southern gate, and a side gate with arches leading to a main path toward the palace. The walls are topped with towers and guarded by city guards. The gates were made stationary following the invention of the horseless carriage to allow for improved traffic flow. The city was once thought to be impenetrable.

The city contains a primary weaponry creation facility for exploding shells, storehouses for traditional weapons such as cannonballs, and an industrial district. It also housed scientific research laboratories. A warehouse or storehouse was located near the western wall. The palace is noted for its oversized thick doors.

The buildings of the city are described as gray stone, and the city is noted as spread out and piecemealed together in comparison to Stonehaven. James Gentry claimed that the wood of the Scepter of Queen Reina the First came from a renowned tree near Rislandia City.

History

Rislandia City was founded by Jory Malaky approximately 500 years ago, in Year 1 of the Malaky Dynasty. It survived multiple wars over the centuries and was once considered impenetrable.

During the events of For Steam and Country, the city was occupied by Wyranth forces and was subsequently liberated by Zaira von Monocle. Following the occupation, the city entered a period of rebuilding, with food rationing in effect and refugees from Portsgate present in the city.

In The Fight for Rislandia, the city was again threatened and ultimately invaded by the Wyranth army, suffering significant damage before being retaken. This engagement is recorded as the Second Battle of Rislandia City.

In The Iron Wedding, the city continued to bear the scars of the Wyranth invasion. Its population had declined since the conflict, aether fuel was rationed to essentials, and gas lamps burned dimly in the streets. The city observed a period of public mourning following the death of King Malaky XVI, with black cloths lining the tops of the city walls and city streets, shops displaying black hangings, and city guards lining the streets holding candles in vigil. Rislandian flags flew at half-mast over the walls. Despite Wyranth victory in the broader war, Ivan, the Iron Emperor did not occupy the city.

In The Steam Knight, the city had been recently retaken from the Wyranth following a brutal assault, though much of the population had not yet returned. The Grand Rislandian Army evacuated King Malaky XVI from the city during the Wyranth advance. The stones of the courtyard were noted to seem darker than before.

Role in For Steam and Country

In For Steam and Country, Rislandia City figures prominently as both a destination and a setting. Zaira von Monocle dreamed of wearing an elegant crimson dress to a ball there. Matthias du Gearsmith noted he would need to return to the city soon. James Gentry aspired to join the Knights of the Crystal Spire, who are based in the city. Talyen von Cravat is described as being from the capital.

After fleeing Wyranth soldiers, Zaira and James rode toward the city. Baron Theodore von Monocle's log mentioned returning there after a sojourn home, and Talyen's log noted it as the place they would have to return to in order to report losses.

During the events of the novel, the city experienced a severe earthquake that caused building collapses and widespread panic in the streets. Smoke rose from a distant section of the city, and several buildings had collapsed or were cracked.

The Liliana was located in Rislandia City during the story and departed from there, with the city disappearing far below and behind the airship as it sailed through the clouds. The Liliana subsequently returned to Rislandia City after its mission; Zaira remained unconscious until the ship arrived back. King Malaky XVI was present in the city and needed to be informed of Wyranth activities and news regarding Baron von Monocle.

"looked out toward the Crystal Spire on one side and down upon the rest of Rislandia City on the other."

"Rislandia City disappeared far below and behind us as we sailed through the clouds."

"The rest of Malaky City looked dull in comparison" [to the Crystal Spire]

"She's not in the best shape, but she'll get us back to the capital."

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, Rislandia City continued to serve as a primary base of operations. Zaira von Monocle maintained a residence there — an apartment building a few blocks from King Malaky's Palace, reserved for her by the king, whose spiral stairs were designed as an artistic representation of the Crystal Spire. The city's cobblestone streets were lit by gas lamps, and horseless carriages and riders on horseback moved through them regularly.

Ivan, the Iron Emperor traveled into the heart of Rislandia City undetected during the events of the novel, representing a significant security breach for the kingdom, and later appeared in Zaira's apartment there. Wyranth forces were reported to be headed directly for the city. Despite these threats, the city was found to be safe and unburned when the Liliana returned. The city was filled with refugees from Portsgate at this time.

The Liliana had been allotted three weeks before needing to return to Rislandia City. Among the crew's plans upon returning were having a new propeller blade fabricated for the Liliana, and Ethan von Lantern invited Zaira to tea in the city. The Liliana ultimately landed there on its return. A young girl rescued from Portsgate was also dropped off in the city.

"I walked through the cobblestone streets toward my apartment, a residence King Malaky had reserved for me a few blocks from the palace."

"The Iron Emperor had traveled into the heart of Rislandia, into the capital itself"

"I'd have to get one of those when we returned to Rislandia City"

"When we get back to Rislandia City, would it be alright with you if I took you to tea?"

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, Rislandia City became the primary theater of war. The Wyranth army marched toward the city, and the Grand Rislandian Army patrolled its streets in preparation. The civilian population was evacuated and a curfew was instituted. The city's weapons facilities — including the primary facility for producing exploding shells and storehouses for cannonballs — were central to the defense effort.

Wyranth infiltrators were discovered on rooftops within the city. Despite the defenses, the Wyranth broke through the city walls, penetrating the southern section, and ultimately sacked and ransacked the city. Several buildings were burned down, many gas lamps were extinguished, smoke rose from the city proper, and shops near the palace had broken windows. The Wyranth defended the occupied city with cannons mounted on the walls, though the western entrance was left unguarded. The Grand Rislandian Army took heavy casualties.

The Liliana hovered above the city during the battle, and Zaira von Monocle recorded the engagement in the ship's log. The city was the target of a planned counter-offensive using the Liliana as a crop duster deploying the anti-serum. A side gate with arches provided access to the main path toward the palace. Following the battle, General von Monocle ordered the evacuation of troops from the city before the counter-offensive, and subsequently declared the city retaken after the palace was cleared. The city then entered a period of rebuilding.

Zaira also returned to Rislandia City for the Winter Festival during the events of this book, and it was noted that Ethan von Lantern had attended a boarding school there.

"The lights from the Crystal Spire illuminated the city"

"the Crystal Spire seemed to watch us as we made our way around the city"

"It seemed unfair to think we would lose Rislandia City no matter what we accomplished."

"I returned to Rislandia City to see my dearest Liliana for the Winter Festival."

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, Rislandia City remained the capital of Rislandia but bore visible signs of the Wyranth invasion. Its population had declined since the conflict, and the supply of aether fuel had been cut to essentials. Gas lamps burned dimly in the streets when Zaira last walked through them. Corporal Tyson assisted Zaira and her father in securing a bomb from the city's industrial district.

Zaira and her father returned to the city in the late afternoon, traveling there by horseless carriage from Loveridge. Zaira described city life as not for her, though she noted she missed the sight of the Crystal Spire. Before departing on her next mission, she visited everyone she knew in the city.

The city was the location where Zaira received an offer of marriage in exchange for airship plans. Zaira wished to send a messenger to the city to inform King Malaky XVI of a ceasefire plan. Ethan von Lantern reflected that, had he not traveled to Nyanzi, he and Zaira would have argued in the city instead. Ivan, the Iron Emperor sent a courier to the city bearing wedding invitations. The palace served as the residence of Queen Reina I and Zaira's father during this period.

Following the death of King Malaky XVI, the city entered a public period of mourning. Black cloths lined the tops of the city walls and city streets, shops displayed black hangings, and city guards lined the streets holding candles in vigil. Rislandian flags flew at half-mast over the walls. Despite Wyranth victory in the broader war, Ivan did not occupy the city.

"Springtime had come in Rislandia City, a breeze blowing the cool air from the northwestern Oler Mountains"

"WE RETURNED to Rislandia City in the late afternoon"

"I missed the sight of my home city."

"Instead of bringing me comfort, the Rislandian flags flying at half-mast over the walls of the city only brought me a sense of loss."

Role in The Crystal Conspiracy

Role in The Steam Knight

In The Steam Knight, Rislandia City served as both the point of departure and the ultimate destination for the story's central mission. The city had been recently retaken from the Wyranth following a brutal assault, though much of the population had not yet returned. The Wyranth army had been making advances toward the city, and at one point the enemy was at the city gates, with the city described as on the verge of being lost.

The Grand Rislandian Army evacuated King Malaky XVI from the city during the Wyranth advance. Dr. von Breech had been traveling to the city from Brighton before being turned back by the conflict. James Gentry had previously trained by running up and down the steps of the Crystal Spire there. James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern departed from the city by horseless carriage before dawn for their mission, and returned there after its completion. Upon returning, James noted that the stones in the courtyard seemed darker than before. Zaira von Monocle remarked that she was going land crazy in Rislandia City. The road from Rislandia City leads toward the hideout of Lou. A civilian carriage cab was conscripted to return the group to the city after they required healing, rather than making the journey on foot.

The city continued to be described as a hub for all of Rislandia and the Atrebla kingdom beyond, with traders coming from all over the world to its marketplaces. Horseless carriages could be heard whirring through the city streets even at night.

"the capital city was a hub for all of Rislandia, and even to the Atrebla kingdom beyond"

"the cool breeze of the northern city's evening"

"Ethan conscripted a civilian carriage cab from the town so we wouldn't have to walk back to Rislandia City."

"We're on the verge of losing Rislandia City."

Spoiler: The Steam Knight 2

This section reveals events from “The Steam Knight 2”.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, Rislandia City occupies a prominent central hill on the Iberanth Peninsula, built directly above the air crystal caverns that lie beneath it. This geographic detail — that the city sits atop the caverns from which air crystals are drawn — is not addressed on the novel-based account on this page and represents a significant addition to the city's origin story.

Founding and the Years of Building

The sourcebook provides a more granular account of the city's founding than the novels convey. According to A History of Rislandia, the original settlement was deliberately relocated to the hill above the crystal caverns before Jory Malaky ordered construction of the Crystal Spire. The city did not receive its name — Rislandia City — until the Spire was completed and named, an event the sourcebook places in Year 40 of the Malaky Dynasty. The period of primary construction is recorded as Years 15 through 35.

By Year 10, the settlement already held approximately 15,000 inhabitants and contained stone walls, a church, guild halls, farms, workshops, and homes. The sourcebook records that the city grew steadily through what it calls the Years of Building, eventually encompassing the Royal Palace, a Great Temple, Guild Halls, a Senate House, the city walls, a Great Library, and the Crystal Spire itself among its principal structures.

Layout and Architecture

The sourcebook describes the city's buildings as brick and stone, often three to four stories tall with narrow streets — a description that conflicts with the novel-based account on this page, which characterizes the buildings as gray stone without specifying brick. Both versions agree on the concentric-circle layout radiating from the Crystal Spire. A History of Rislandia also identifies the city as located in the Central Heartland of Rislandia and connected to all major towns and cities by the King's Road, as well as to Cliffside Castle and the eastern coast by the Eastern Road.

The sourcebook additionally names structures not listed on the novel-based account on this page: a Great Temple, a Senate House, and the Great Library of Rislandia, all located within the city. It also notes that the Royal Biographical Compendium is housed in the city.

Governance and Civic Life

According to A History of Rislandia, under King Malaky II's Magistrate System, justice no longer required citizens to travel to Rislandia City — implying that previously the capital had served as the sole seat of legal authority for the kingdom. The sourcebook also records that poorhouses were established in major cities of Rislandia, with Rislandia City implied among them.

The sourcebook describes King's Day celebrations as centered on Rislandia City: public ceremonies and parades are held there, free food and ale are distributed to the populace, and the reigning monarch appears before the people in person.

The Wyranth Occupation and Its Aftermath

The sourcebook records the Wyranth occupation as occurring in Years 19–20 of King Malaky XVI's reign and identifies General Swift as the officer who led the occupation of the city. It further records that Zaira von Monocle defeated the Walking Giant during the Battle of Rislandia City by deliberately ramming The Liliana into the creature to end the battle; the airship was subsequently rebuilt at the crash site north of Rislandia City. The sourcebook confirms that the city was liberated by Zaira's combined force of knights and army remnants, and that it was still rebuilding and experiencing a refugee crisis at the time of the sourcebook's composition, with thousands displaced from Portsgate and other destroyed towns.

Baron von Monocle and the Winter Festival

According to A History of Rislandia, Baron Theodore von Monocle returned to Rislandia City for the Winter Festival on Day 17 of the Month of Princesses, where he reunited with his wife Liliana von Monocle. The sourcebook also records that Talyen von Cravat traveled back and forth to the capital while The Liliana was grounded, and that Matthias du Gearsmith was based in the city, where Talyen spoke with him about Baron von Monocle's will.

"Baron von Monocle returned to Rislandia City for the Winter Festival"

Historical Note: King Malaky VII

The sourcebook records that Rislandia City was the site of King Malaky VII's religious suppression, which it dates to Years 285–312 of the Malaky Dynasty — a period of significant civic and religious upheaval in the capital not addressed on the novel-based account on this page.
