Marcus (Wyranth Spy)
Marcus was a spy operating on behalf of, or in alliance with, the Wyranth Empire within Rislandian territory. He was described as a man who traded in spying and the secrets of kingdoms. His activities in The Steam Knight centered on cultivating the traitor Lou (Knight of the Crystal Spire) as an intelligence source before his eventual capture by members of Zaira von Monocle's group.
Description
Marcus was a man of unremarkable civilian appearance. He wore a long dark coat and glasses, and had scraggly hair. He carried a knife. His glasses were noted to have fallen cockeyed across his face during his capture.
Role in The Steam Knight
Intelligence Meetings with Lou
In The Steam Knight, Marcus conducted at least two clandestine meetings with Lou (Knight of the Crystal Spire) to receive military intelligence in exchange for payment. The first meeting took place at the top of The Crystal Spire; a subsequent meeting was held at the Dovetail Tavern. At these meetings Marcus paid Lou with a bag — later described as a small bag — of metal coins. Among the intelligence Lou provided was information about the Grand Rislandian Army's position near Loveridge.
During one of their exchanges, Marcus dismissed Zaira von Monocle as not being the same as her father. When informed that Zaira's father, Baron Theodore von Monocle, had also returned, Marcus fell silent. He assured Lou of future reward, stating: "I'll see to it you're taken care of when we control this land."
Capture and Interrogation
Marcus was later located on a cobblestone street, where he was tackled by James Gentry. He was disarmed and captured by Ethan von Lantern and subsequently bound with twine by James. He was then brought to the Knights of the Crystal Spire for interrogation.
Under interrogation, Marcus confirmed the location of Lou's hiding place. His prior description of that location — including the trees covering the area — proved accurate: "Just as Marcus had described, trees covered an area ahead."
