The crystal machine (also referred to as the strange machine, the device, the machine, and the instrument) was an experimental piece of technology designed to make crystal magic power flow in a controlled and usable manner. Versions of the device appeared across multiple conflicts, with its core function relying on an earth crystal channeled through a human being possessing giant's blood. It represented a significant, if dangerous, step in the practical application of crystal energy.

Description

The crystal machine was a substantial mechanical apparatus distinguished by several notable features. It contained two inset compartments from which wires protruded, each wire terminating in small pads functioning as electrodes intended to be attached to an operator's fingertips. Steam was observed shooting from cracks in the device's center during operation, suggesting an internal pressure system integral to its function. The machine also incorporated a mechanically operated platform that raised via gears to reveal the earth crystal housed within its interior.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, the crystal machine was operated by Dr. Metzengerstein in an experimental procedure involving Zaira von Monocle, who served as the human conduit by virtue of her giant's blood lineage. Zaira interfaced with the device through the electrode pads attached to her fingertips.

During the experiment, the machine's activation produced severe and uncontrolled effects. As the text records, "It vibrated violently, wailing in protest." The violent vibrations and wailing were accompanied by a cave collapse, indicating that the energy released exceeded safe parameters. The machine ceased functioning almost instantly when Zaira removed her hands from the electrodes, demonstrating that the human conduit's direct contact was essential to sustaining its operation.

Following these events, Ivan, the Iron Emperor expressed regret that a version of the device had not been available during a subsequent battle, stating: "It's a shame we couldn't have brought the crystal device. We could use it just about now, use the ground against the enemy." This remark indicated that the machine's ability to channel crystal energy could theoretically be weaponized against enemy forces by turning the ground itself against them.

When the possibility of a portable version was raised, Dr. Metzengerstein indicated that it would be some time before he could create such a unit, suggesting that miniaturization of the technology presented significant engineering challenges at the time.
