Description

Dr. Metzengerstein wore a lab coat and goggles in The Iron Wedding. He had bushy eyebrows, a thicker but not fat frame, and stood a hair taller than Zaira von Monocle. He was known for intense focus when engaged in scientific work, often appearing oblivious to other people present in the room, described as "lost in his scientific work as if the other humans in the room weren't there."

In The Steam Knight, he was described as a "spectacle-wearing fop," suggesting he wore spectacles in addition to or in place of goggles in that context. He traveled with a red-haired female assistant.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, Dr. Metzengerstein served as Ivan, the Iron Emperor's primary scientist and played several significant roles across the events of the novel.

The Changeling Net

Acting on Ivan, the Iron Emperor's orders, Dr. Metzengerstein constructed a Changeling Net for Zaira von Monocle. He entered Ivan's sitting room accompanied by two lab assistants who carried the components of the device. He personally adjusted the straps of the changeling net on Zaira and instructed her on how to operate its receptors.

The Crystal Machine

Dr. Metzengerstein operated the Crystal Machine during the events at the fortified tower. He later noted that the crystal device could have been used against the enemy, and acknowledged it would be some time before he could create a portable crystal device unit. Following Zaira von Monocle's collapse, Ivan set him to work on a solution to protect against crystal energy feedback.

Automaton Control

From a position in the fortified tower, Dr. Metzengerstein operated a strange control system used to direct the Automatons. The system consisted of several levers, dials, and antennae. During the battle, he received orders from General Gregor and was observed sweating nervously. He reported to those present when all automatons had been incapacitated. He also suggested rappelling down the tower as a means of reaching and repairing the disabled automatons.

Role in The Steam Knight

In The Steam Knight, Dr. Metzengerstein was the target of an espionage mission carried out by James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern. At the time of the novel's events, he was operating a laboratory disguised as a small farm and house south of Loveridge main town. Wyranth officers were known to visit his farm on occasion, and he had met with top-ranking Wyranth officials in Loveridge in the days preceding the mission.

Metzengerstein was believed to be providing the Wyranth with technological and biological advantages, including accusations that he had altered people to fuse them with animalistic traits. He was also believed responsible for creating the Giant's Blood Serum used by Wyranth soldiers. Additionally, he had designed power systems used by the Wyranth for their Mechanized Units, and had received a letter from a Mr. Stephen Nava regarding mechanized unit prototypes. His desk drawers contained mathematical papers, designs, and letters.

James and Ethan successfully recovered documents from his laboratory. Cid commended them for recovering what they could. The barn at his laboratory was reported to be in flames when Major Edwin Ral last saw it. It was noted that the farm had previously burned down and been rebuilt more than two years before the events of the novel, suggesting Metzengerstein had maintained a presence near Loveridge for some time.

Relationships

  • Ivan, the Iron Emperor: Dr. Metzengerstein served directly as Ivan's scientist, carrying out research and construction projects on the emperor's orders.
  • General Gregor: During military operations in The Iron Wedding, Metzengerstein received direct orders from General Gregor while manning the automaton control system.
  • Zaira von Monocle: Metzengerstein fitted and instructed Zaira in the use of the Changeling Net, and later worked on a solution related to her collapse from crystal energy feedback.
  • Dr. von Breech: Rislandian intelligence compared Metzengerstein to Dr. von Breech, Rislandia's own prominent scientist.
  • James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern: The two Rislandian agents conducted an espionage mission targeting Metzengerstein's laboratory near Loveridge in The Steam Knight.
  • Cid: Cid oversaw the mission against Metzengerstein's laboratory and commended James and Ethan for the documents they recovered.
  • Major Edwin Ral: Ral reported on the state of Metzengerstein's farm, noting the barn was in flames.

In the short stories

In Tangled Web, set shortly after the Baron's disappearance, Metzengerstein "from Nyanzi" owns a secluded estate with a barn in the forest outside Loveridge. There he "has been helping people upgrade themselves for years". He merged Thesally with a spider breed that lays its eggs inside its mates. Edwin avoids the doctor's main residence for fear of his "other mad experiments". The doctor does not appear in person.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, Dr. Metzengerstein is treated as a current and unresolved threat rather than a historical figure, placing him firmly within the ongoing political and military situation of the present day rather than in the settled past.

The sourcebook records that his laboratory was destroyed, consistent with the burning of the farm described in The Steam Knight and referenced in Tangled Web. Among the contents lost or recovered from that laboratory, A History of Rislandia specifically notes the presence of an experimental large tripod-mounted energy beam cannon — a weapon not mentioned in the novels' accounts of the laboratory raid. This device is catalogued separately on the wiki as the Metzengerstein Energy Device.

The sourcebook also attributes to Metzengerstein the creation of the spider-like woman encountered by Major Edwin Ral in Loveridge, describing her explicitly as "Dr. Metzengerstein's experiment." This aligns with the events of Tangled Web, in which Metzengerstein is said to have merged Thesally with a spider breed, though A History of Rislandia frames the encounter as a matter of historical record rather than narrative detail, and does not name the subject of the experiment by name.
