Overview
Wandrey introduced himself to the narrator with the words: "I'm Ensign Wandrey, the first assistant medic as part of my duties." His rank of Ensign placed him among the junior officers of the crew. Beyond his medical responsibilities, he demonstrated composure and willingness to act under threat, standing at the narrator's request to scout their surroundings even as the situation grew perilous.
Role in The Blood of Giants
In The Blood of Giants, Ensign Wandrey brought supplies from the mess to treat the narrator, who had sustained a wound. He used an ether-soaked rag to help manage the narrator's pain during the procedure. To access the wound, he ripped part of the back of the narrator's shirt. He then poured a liquid on the wound that burned, applied a salve behind the wound, and removed the bullet from the narrator's shoulder using large tweezers.
Following the surgery, Wandrey helped the narrator to her feet and assisted her in crawling toward the mess door. At the narrator's request, he stood up to look for the collapsed cave and confirmed that it was closed.
Shortly thereafter, Wandrey was shot at point-blank range by a Nightman on the deck and fell. His jar of ether rolled toward the narrator after he was shot.

Appearances
In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, this crew member's full name is Devon Wandrey, a detail not given in the novels. The sourcebook records that he served as a medic and was killed by Nightmen boarders during the escape.
The sourcebook's description of his role as simply "medic" may represent a condensed summary rather than a direct contradiction of his novelistic title of first assistant medic, but the difference is noted. The circumstances of his death are described as occurring "during the escape," which broadly aligns with the novel's account of his being shot on the deck during the crisis, though the sourcebook does not specify that he was shot at point-blank range.
