Technology & Gadgets

Minor Gadgets & Equipment

A catalogue of smaller devices, tools, alchemical preparations, and substances appearing in The Adventures of Baron Von Monocle series that do not warrant individual articles, covering items from farm equipment to military ordnance across For Steam and Country, The Blood of Giants, The Fight for Rislandia, The Iron Wedding, and later volumes.

Minor Gadgets & Equipment

Minor Gadgets & Equipment

The world of The Adventures of Baron Von Monocle featured a wide variety of steampunk devices, alchemical preparations, and improvised tools beyond the major technologies documented elsewhere on this wiki. The items below appeared in For Steam and Country, The Blood of Giants, The Fight for Rislandia, and The Iron Wedding and are grouped by general function. For larger or more prominent technologies, see Airship Technology, Vitality Ether, Mecha Suits, and Mobile Artillery.

Civilian & Domestic Devices

Stationary Ferromagnetic High-Frequency Howler

The stationary ferromagnetic high-frequency howler was an exotic device given to Zaira von Monocle by her father as a gift. It was described as stationary and served a practical agricultural purpose on the von Monocle family farm, helping to scare off wolves. In For Steam and Country, the device was noted as part of the farm's equipment: "the stationary ferromagnetic high-frequency howler, which helps scare off wolves from the farm."

Hand-Crank Hair Drier

The hand-crank hair drier was a personal grooming device owned and used by Zaira von Monocle. It shot warm air onto the hair, removing moisture and adding fluff. In The Iron Wedding, Zaira used it and described it as "a new hand-crank hair drier, which shot warm air onto my hair."

Gas Water Heater

The gas water heater was a domestic appliance present in Zaira von Monocle's apartment in Rislandia City. In The Iron Wedding, it was used to heat bath water.

Gas Lamp

Gas lamps—also referred to as gaslamps—were a common light source used for illumination in Rislandia City streets and in private residences such as Zaira von Monocle's apartment. They featured a pilot switch. In The Iron Wedding, it was noted that the supply of gas lamps had become limited since the Wyranth invasion.

Note: The gas lamps described in Zaira's apartment and on Rislandia City streets in The Iron Wedding are distinct from the handheld gas lamps carried by soldiers at a crash site in The Fight for Rislandia*, which are documented separately under Engineering & Maintenance Tools below.*

Crimson Cape

The crimson cape was a personal garment belonging to Zaira von Monocle. In The Iron Wedding, Zaira insisted on wearing it despite a servant's warning that it would make her a target. It brought her comfort and flowed behind her. The text recorded: "It flowed behind me in its crimson gloriousness."

Observation & Navigation Instruments

Gyromatic Expanding Telescope

The gyromatic expanding telescope was a viewing instrument aboard The Liliana. It was equipped with a crank that allowed the user to easily zoom or adjust the view, making it a more practical solution than having a crew member run back and forth with binoculars. The device was described as new at the time of the events of The Blood of Giants.

In The Blood of Giants, Zaira von Monocle used the telescope to observe battles from the airship bridge, to view the coastline, to spot Portsgate in ruins, and to identify the Crystal Spire of Rislandia City. Major Edwin Ral also used it to obtain proper navigational bearings. The text described it as "my gyromatic expanding telescope, complete with a crank to allow me to easily zoom or adjust the view" and noted that "Major Ral looked through the gyromatic expanding telescope in order to get his proper navigational bearings."

In The Iron Wedding, Zaira recalled having seen battles up close through the gyromatic telescope aboard The Liliana, noting that some views were not meant to be seen close up. The text recorded: "I'd seen battles up close through the gyromatic telescope on the Liliana."

Note: The device is referred to as the "gyromatic expanding telescope" in The Blood of Giants and as the "gyromatic telescope" in The Iron Wedding*. Both entries are preserved here; the shorter name in* The Iron Wedding may be an informal reference to the same instrument. Pending author clarification.

Embedded Telescope

The embedded telescope was a telescope built directly into the command console of The Liliana's bridge. It was operated by turning a crank that controlled the other end of the instrument, located at the bottom of the ship. In The Fight for Rislandia, Zaira von Monocle used it to observe the Wyranth army and to watch the commando drop mission below. The text recorded: "I placed my eye to the lens of the embedded telescope in the command console, turning a crank to operate the other end at the bottom of the ship."

Telescope (Bridge)

A telescope was present on the bridge of The Liliana in The Fight for Rislandia. Lieutenant Colwell used it to assess the impact of ordnance and to observe the state of the ground battle below, pressing his eye to it to get a better view of the groundside situation. Zaira also used it to observe the giant creature during attack runs. The text recorded: "Lieutenant Colwell peered through the telescope" and "Colwell had his eye pressed to the telescope, getting a better view of the groundside situation."

Note: The bridge telescope, the gyromatic expanding telescope, and the embedded telescope may represent the same or overlapping instruments across different books. All three entries are preserved here pending author clarification.

Brass Spyglass

The brass spyglass was a long brass instrument used by a scout aboard The Liliana in The Blood of Giants. The scout employed it to search the coastline of Zenwey for a suitable landing place.

Spyglass

A spyglass appeared in The Fight for Rislandia in two distinct contexts. Marina du Willet used one to observe the battle through a hole in the ship, propping it against her cheek while holding Rhys with her other arm. Separately, Cid produced a spyglass when a large force appeared from the forest; he used it to identify that the approaching soldiers did not wear Wyranth helms, confirming them as Rislandian, before setting it down and leaning back in his chair. The text recorded: "She had a spyglass up to her eye" and "Cid produced a spyglass and looked intently, seeming worried."

Periscope

A periscope was located on the bridge of The Liliana. In The Fight for Rislandia, Zaira von Monocle used it to watch the giant creature during the ship's circling runs. The text recorded: "I watched the creature through the periscope."

Magnifying Goggles

Magnifying goggles were worn by snipers stationed on a watchtower and functioned similarly to spyglasses or binoculars. When worn, they left a dented impression in the skin of the wearer's face. In The Iron Wedding, Ivan borrowed a pair from one of the snipers to observe a battle; Zaira von Monocle also used them briefly for the same purpose. The text recorded: "The soldier ripped the goggles from his face, which left a dented impression in his skin."

Note: The signal flare and the flare gun may describe the same device or a related class of signaling equipment. Both entries are preserved here pending author clarification.

Vehicle Components

Steamstack

The steamstack was a component of the Horseless Carriage. In For Steam and Country, Zaira von Monocle nearly touched the steamstack and was warned away by Matthias du Gearsmith, who cautioned her that it could burn a person very quickly. His exact words were: "That can burn you faster than you can say fire."

Fire-Retardant Coating

The fire-retardant coating was a special protective treatment applied to the wooden surfaces of The Liliana by its engineers. In The Blood of Giants, the coating prevented the deck from catching fire when hot embers landed on it, causing the embers to cool before the wooden surface could ignite. The text noted that "our engineers had the ship outfitted with a special fire-retardant coating."

Steam-Powered Cranes

Steam-powered cranes were mechanical lifting devices used by dock workers at Cliffside Castle's port. In The Fight for Rislandia, dock workers employed them to unload goods; the cranes' exhausts were described as shooting into the air. The text recorded: "Dock workers struggled to unload goods with mechanical, steam-powered cranes."

Cranes (Airship Reconstruction)

A distinct type of crane appeared in The Iron Wedding at an airship reconstruction site. These cranes resembled horseless carriages in their base construction but were fitted with large metal arms, gears, and mechanical cranks used to lift the arms up and down. The text recorded: "They looked much like our horseless carriage, but with big metal arms attached to them, along with gears and mechanical cranks."

Note: The steam-powered cranes at Cliffside Castle's port (The Fight for Rislandia) and the cranes at the airship reconstruction site (The Iron Wedding) are documented as separate entries. Whether they represent the same class of device is not confirmed in the text; both entries are preserved pending author clarification.

Communication Devices

Carrier Pigeon

Carrier pigeons were used in For Steam and Country as a means of delivering urgent messages over long distances. Baron Theodore von Monocle recorded in his log that he received word by carrier pigeon regarding the illness and subsequent death of Liliana von Monocle: "I received word by carrier pigeon that Liliana has been terribly sick."

Brass Communications Funnel

The brass communications funnel was a device located on the bridge of The Liliana. It consisted of a long tube that extended through and amplified sound across the various rooms of the ship. In The Blood of Giants, Zaira von Monocle used it to communicate orders to the port cannoneers and to Harkerpal in the engine room. The text described Zaira dashing over to "the brass communications funnel" to issue commands during combat.

In The Fight for Rislandia, Lieutenant Colwell was observed bending over the brass communications funnel on the bridge to speak into it and relay orders to the crew. The text recorded: "Colwell made his way over to our brass communications funnel and bent over to speak into it."

Communications Funnel (Ship System)

The communications funnel was the broader voice-transmission system aboard The Liliana, running through the lower corridors of the deck and into the ship's cabins. In The Blood of Giants, Lieutenant Colwell's voice echoed through it to announce that land had been sighted, reaching Zaira in her cabin below. Baron Theodore von Monocle also called battle stations and issued orders to the cannoneers through the system. The text recorded: "Lieutenant Colwell's voice echoed through the communications funnel, down through the lower corridors of the deck and into my cabin."

In The Fight for Rislandia, Harkerpal directed Zaira von Monocle to call through the communications funnel to reach Rhys below decks. Zaira subsequently used it to order Rhys to deploy the anti-serum during battle, to relay firing orders to the cannoneers, and to order all crew to brace for unorthodox maneuvers. The text recorded: "Just call through the communications funnel and he should be able to hear you" and "I leaned into the communications funnel."

Note: The brass communications funnel on the bridge and the ship-wide communications funnel system appear to be related or overlapping technologies. Both entries are preserved here pending author clarification on whether they describe a single integrated device or two distinct components.

Communications Device

The communications device was a piece of equipment Zaira von Monocle had aboard The Liliana in The Blood of Giants. The arena officiator in the Nightmen Arena possessed a similar but significantly amplified version, with receivers lining the boxes and top of the arena to broadcast the officiator's voice to all present. Zaira noted: "He must have had a communications device like the one I had on the Liliana, except amplified to quite a degree."

Amplifying Device

The amplifying device was a large piece of equipment used at public gatherings to project a speaker's voice over a distance. It amplified the speaker's words through a tube so that people standing far away could hear, though it made the voice sound strange—described as almost higher than usual. In The Iron Wedding, one such device stood in front of the podium at King Malaky's funeral procession, where it amplified Baron Theodore von Monocle's address to the assembled crowd. The text recorded: "A large device stood in front of him, amplifying his words in a tube so people could hear from a distance."

Flare Gun

The flare gun was a small, pistol-like signaling device. In For Steam and Country, James Gentry carried one in his vest. James described it as shooting fireworks into the air; when fired, it produced a brilliant white light reported to be stronger than the moon and stars, accompanied by a fizzing sound followed by a boom and crack. The device held only a single shot and was intended to be used at nightfall so that an airship overhead could observe the signal. James used it to signal The Liliana during the mission into Wyranth territory. He noted that the Knights of the Crystal Spire possessed many such gadgets.

In The Blood of Giants, Sergeant Darminder Babington also carried a flare gun in his pack. He produced it and pointed it at a clear area of sky, firing it to produce a bang and a display of crackling fireworks in order to signal The Liliana.

In The Fight for Rislandia, Ethan von Lantern carried a flare gun in a clasp on his belt loop. He used it to fire a flare into the air as a beacon for The Liliana; the flare glowed in the low light of early evening. The text recorded: "Ethan stepped forward, pulling his flare gun from a clasp on his belt loop."

Signal Flare

In The Fight for Rislandia, First Sergeant Wright's commando team used a signal flare to communicate their position to The Liliana after close to an hour on the ground. The flare was shot into the sky from deep in the forest and was described as sparking and crackling. The text recorded: "a signal flare shot into the sky from deep into the forest."

Note: The signal flare and the flare gun may describe the same device or a related class of signaling equipment. Both entries are preserved here pending author clarification.

Engineering & Maintenance Tools

Prismatic Spanner

The prismatic spanner was a tool used by Harkerpal aboard The Liliana. In The Blood of Giants, during a mid-air engine breakdown, Harkerpal struck the engine as hard as he could with the prismatic spanner in an attempt to restore function, praying for the crew's lives as he did so. His words were recorded as: "I hit the engine as hard as I could with my prismatic spanner and prayed for our lives."

Protective Eyewear

Protective eyewear—also referred to as protective eyeglasses or protective glasses—was safety equipment worn by engineers during welding operations aboard The Liliana. In The Blood of Giants, the eyewear was stored in a tool chest. Harkerpal provided a pair to Zaira von Monocle when she was present during the welding of the propeller. Engineers also wore long protective coats during such work. Harkerpal's words were: "We must get you some protective eyewear immediately."

Fire Suppression Spray Pump

The fire suppression spray pump was a firefighting device stored in the mess of The Liliana. It consisted of a container of fire suppression solution and a sprayer attached to the container by brass coils. The container featured a crank that activated gears to push a foamy substance through the device. In The Blood of Giants, two crew members retrieved the pump from the mess—one carrying the container and one carrying the sprayer—and used it to extinguish a fire caused by lava on the deck.

Gas Lamps (Handheld, Military)

Handheld gas lamps were portable light sources carried by soldiers in The Fight for Rislandia. They were used to provide illumination at a crash site in dark wreckage. The text recorded: "A couple of soldiers carried handheld gas lamps."

Note: These handheld military gas lamps are distinct from the gas lamps used for street and domestic lighting in Rislandia City, documented under Civilian & Domestic Devices above.

Rappelling Ropes

Rappelling ropes were used by commandos to descend quickly from an airship. In The Fight for Rislandia, Zaira von Monocle recalled having previously been tied to one and hoisted up to The Liliana while bleeding from a gunshot wound. Zaira expressed a preference for rope ladders over rappelling ropes. The text recorded: "I'd used the rappelling ropes one time before, tied to one and foisted up to the ship when I was bleeding from a gunshot wound."

Rope Ladders

Rope ladders were used in The Fight for Rislandia by Zaira von Monocle, Ethan von Lantern, and Marina du Willet to descend from The Liliana into the city below. Three ladders were dropped over the side of the ship; the last rung hung a couple of feet off the ground. Zaira preferred rope ladders over rappelling ropes for the sturdier footing they provided. The text recorded: "My people dropped three ladders over the side."

Medical Preparations & Instruments

Medic's Potion

The medic's potion was a preparation administered by the ship's medic aboard The Liliana. In For Steam and Country, it was given to Zaira von Monocle following her injuries. The potion caused Zaira to sleep for a day and a half; she did not remember dressing in a nightgown after taking it. Marina du Willet remarked on its potency: "Medic's got some nasty potions, don't she?"

Elixir

The elixir, also referred to as the medic's elixir, was a restorative preparation administered by the medic aboard The Liliana. In For Steam and Country, it was given to Zaira von Monocle after her injuries and was described as doing wonders for her recovery: "The elixir the medic gave you seems to be doing wonders." The text noted that Vitality Ether possessed restorative properties beyond those of regular elixirs, placing the medic's elixir in a lesser category of healing substances. Talyen von Cravat recovered from his own injuries by normal means using the medic's standard preparations.

Battle Potions

Battle potions were preparations given to arena contestants before combat in The Blood of Giants. They came in round bottles and were said to keep fear from the fighters and keep them sharp. The narrator compared them to concoctions used by Wyranth soldiers to make them fight more ferociously. Sergeant Darminder Babington hesitated before drinking his. The potions were described as intended to "keep the fear from them and keep them sharp."

Smelling Salts

Smelling salts were a restorative substance used by Dr. Estrella du Clockhand. In The Blood of Giants, she used them to wake Zaira von Monocle after she was knocked unconscious. The salts were kept in a small jar in Dr. du Clockhand's bag and were described as producing a pungent, foul smell. Dr. du Clockhand identified them with the words: "Smelling salts to help wake you."

In The Fight for Rislandia, Dr. du Clockhand again employed smelling salts: she used them to revive an unconscious Wyranth driver before a counter-serum injection could be administered, and separately used them to revive Commander Colwell after he struck his head. The text recorded: "Dr. du Clockhand squatted beside Rhys and revived the Wyranth with smelling salts when he was ready" and "Dr. du Clockhand's smelling salts gave me a start."

Enzyme Concoction

The enzyme concoction was a preparation formulated by Rhys in The Blood of Giants for Marina du Willet. It was intended to break down properties of the serum bonded to her blood cells. The concoction changed color from blue to green when heated. Marina drank the entire beaker and found it disgusting. Rhys noted: "I added enzymes to the concoction, which should break down some of the properties of the original serum she ingested," and indicated that its effectiveness would be determined over the following days. See also Giant's Blood Serum.

Syringe

A syringe was used by Rhys in The Fight for Rislandia to administer the counter-serum. During the operation, the syringe was dropped in the dirt when a Wyranth soldier grabbed Rhys; the Wyranth attempted to jab it at Rhys before Corporal Perry forced the soldier to release it. Rhys then recovered the syringe and injected it into the Wyranth's neck. The text recorded: "Rhys quickly scooped it out of the dirt."

Alchemic Brew

The alchemic brew was a painkiller preparation given to Zaira von Monocle by doctors in The Fight for Rislandia during her recovery. It was described as alchemic in nature and was used to ease her into rest. The text recorded: "giving me an alchemic brew of painkillers to ease me into rest."

Stethoscope

A stethoscope was used by Dr. Estrella du Clockhand in The Fight for Rislandia to check Zaira von Monocle's breathing. The instrument had two ends placed in the ears and a metal end pressed to the patient's back; Zaira noted it was cold. The text recorded: "She brought out a stethoscope, placing two ends in the ears and the metal end under my gown, pressing to my back."

Canteen

A canteen containing water was carried by Dr. Estrella du Clockhand in her bag in The Fight for Rislandia. She pushed it to Zaira von Monocle's lips; Zaira took it into her own hands and nearly drained half of it. The text recorded: "Dr. du Clockhand scuffled through her bag and pushed a canteen to my lips."

Military & Covert Devices

Tinsomatic Screecher

The tinsomatic screecher was a device employed by the Knights of the Crystal Spire. In For Steam and Country, James Gentry set a timer on a tinsomatic screecher on the way into the Wyranth capital, where it created a significant amount of chaos. James declined to explain the device's workings to Zaira von Monocle, telling her not to ask about it. He described it in his own words: "We set a timer on a device we call a tinsomatic screecher."

Explosive Device

The explosive device was a large piece of ordnance packed into the cargo hold of The Liliana in For Steam and Country. Its payload was reported to be large enough to level Wyranth Castle. The device had been installed by General Carwell as a self-destruct option in the event that the airship fell into enemy hands; its existence was kept secret by General Carwell and Talyen von Cravat. The device required approximately six people to carry. Harkerpal rigged it with wheels and a steam-powered gear crank capable of traversing dirt and foliage terrain, though no steering mechanism could be fitted, meaning crew members were required to push it manually on course. It was secured and readied to be delivered to the ground.

In the subsequent operation, the device—referred to in some accounts simply as the explosive or the device—was carried by the landing party to Devil's Mountain, where six strong men were needed to push it into position. The landing party planted and detonated it inside the mountain or the surrounding forest. The resulting explosion shook the mountain, caved in the aperture, sent a column of dirt and debris into the air, caused fire, and produced a distinctive brilliant baby-blue light pulse.

Exploding Shells

Exploding shells were a form of ordnance introduced in The Blood of Giants. Rislandian scientists reverse-engineered them from examples obtained during The Liliana's previous mission. Upon the ship's return to Rislandia City, the shells were loaded aboard. They were described as packing a much bigger punch than standard cannonballs. General Carwell noted: "our scientists were able to reverse engineer some of the exploding shells you obtained on your last mission."

Smoke Bomb

The smoke bomb was a metal canister used as a projectile by Wyranth soldiers in The Fight for Rislandia. When deployed, the canister spun on the ground and emitted smoke that filled the air and obscured vision. The text recorded: "A metal canister spun on the ground in front of me. Smoke rose from it, filling the air."

Pistol

A pistol was carried by Zaira von Monocle across multiple books. In The Fight for Rislandia, she produced it from its holster upon entering Rislandia City and used it to shoot a Wyranth soldier in the back and wound a second. A Wyranth soldier subsequently shot it out of her hands, leaving her without a weapon. The text recorded: "I produced my pistol from its holster and followed."

In The Iron Wedding, Zaira kept her pistol hidden in a drawer to the left under a framed mirror in her apartment. She retrieved it upon finding Ivan in her apartment; the text described it as having a heavy metallic weight that brought her comfort: "I grabbed the gun, feeling the hilt of the pistol in my hands, its heavy metallic weight a comfort." Ivan allowed her to keep it. Zaira also carried the pistol in a holster on her belt and used it to shoot an assassin aboard the W.S.S. Adventurer, firing it with a bang.

Electric Staffs

Electric staffs were weapons carried by Nightmen guards in The Blood of Giants. The staffs charged with electricity and were used to administer punishment. When drilled into a person, they caused convulsions. The staffs were used publicly to punish Wayde.

Electric Sword / Electrified Swords

Electrified swords were bladed weapons capable of conducting electricity, appearing in the Nightmen Arena in The Blood of Giants. Takala wielded an electric sword that produced electricity hissing and buzzing on contact with other blades; Takala used it to kill Sergeant Darminder Babington. James Gentry also carried an electrified sword in the arena; when driven into Takala's side, it produced electrical impulses that sparked on Takala and set his tunic on fire.

Electrified Stick

The electrified stick was a concealable weapon carried by Rhys under his coat in The Blood of Giants. When activated, it lit with electricity. Rhys used it against Nightmen guards: he jabbed it into the first guard's stomach, causing convulsion and collapse, then smacked a second guard's arm before driving it into that guard's stomach, rendering him unconscious. The device produced the same effect as the punishment instrument used by Oyette on a slave upon Zaira's arrival.

Arena & Facility Equipment

Platform Lift

The platform lift was a mechanical conveyance located inside the Nightmen Arena in The Blood of Giants. It operated by means of several mechanical gears and a lever; pulling the lever caused it to rise and stop. The lift made ticking noises with each movement and was described as crude and shaky but effective. It was used to transport Zaira von Monocle and her cart to the upper level of the arena. A similar platform protruded from the crowd into the dirt pit of the arena and could be raised so the officiator could survey everything below.

Scientific Specimens & Laboratory Materials

Fossilized Rib Bone

The fossilized rib bone was a specimen kept in a cabinet in Rhys's laboratory in The Blood of Giants. It was described as a long arching stone resembling a bow without a string—the rib of an ancient giant creature. Rhys used it to extrapolate the creature's genetics and work toward recreating the species. He identified it with the words: "This is the rib of one such creature." See also The Giants and Evolved Giants.

Items from For Steam and Country, The Blood of Giants, The Fight for Rislandia, and The Iron Wedding are noted inline. For Nightmen-specific technology, see also Nightmen Technology.

In the short stories

Fae dart gun

In Island of the Fae, the Fae use silent darts that kill Private Russell.

Edwin's geared brass lighter

In Tangled Web, Edwin's lighter is "pricey for its size". He uses it to burn through Thesally's webs and set her barn ablaze.

Mobile transformer

In Island of the Fae, Harkerpal builds a transformer to power the field generators on the beach. See Harkerpal's Electrical Field.

In A History of Rislandia

A History of Rislandia provides additional context for several items catalogued on this page, introduces devices not mentioned in the novels, and in at least one case describes an event differently from the novel-based account on this page's account. All facts in this section are drawn from the sourcebook and are attributed accordingly.

Flashlight

According to A History of Rislandia, the flashlight was created by Dr. von Breech. The novels do not attribute an inventor to this device, and the novel-based account on this page does not include an entry for the flashlight; this is new information supplied solely by the sourcebook.

Rotating Crank Turret

According to A History of Rislandia, the rotating crank turret is listed as part of The Liliana's armament. The sourcebook refers to it by the phrase "rotating crank turret" without further elaboration. This device does not appear as a named entry on the novel-based account on this page.

Engine Telegraph

According to A History of Rislandia, the engine telegraph is a shipboard communication instrument that conveys speed commands from the bridge to the engine room of an airship. The sourcebook describes its function as: "Communicates speed commands to the engine room." This device is not catalogued on the novel-based account on this page. It is distinct from the brass communications funnel and the ship-wide communications funnel system documented in the novels, which carry voice orders rather than standardised speed signals.

Clockwork Grenades

According to A History of Rislandia, clockwork grenades are timed explosive devices operated by pulling a pin and twisting internal gears, after which a timer mechanism triggers detonation. The sourcebook describes the sequence as: "Pull pin, twist gears, timer detonates." This device does not appear as a named entry on the novel-based account on this page.

Crystal Device (Ancient, Unknown Purpose)

According to A History of Rislandia, ancient functioning devices made of crystal can be found in dungeon settings. The sourcebook explicitly states their purpose is unknown, quoting them as "Functioning crystal device (unknown purpose)." These objects are presented in the sourcebook as relics of an earlier era rather than as contemporary Rislandian or Wyranth technology. This entry does not appear on the novel-based account on this page.

Glowing Crystal (Altar)

According to A History of Rislandia, glowing crystals are found on altars within dungeon settings. The sourcebook lists this as "Altar with glowing crystal." Like the crystal device above, this is presented as an ancient or site-specific phenomenon rather than manufactured equipment. This entry does not appear on the novel-based account on this page. See also Divine Crystals and Crystal Magic for related lore.

Explosive Device

According to A History of Rislandia, the explosive device was planted by Zaira von Monocle's crew in the chamber beneath the evolved giant, and its explosion destroyed the evolved giant and caused a massive earthquake.

The novel-based account on this page states that the device was carried to Devil's Mountain and detonated inside the mountain or the surrounding forest, producing an explosion that shook the mountain, caved in the aperture, sent debris into the air, caused fire, and produced a brilliant baby-blue light pulse. The novel-based account on this page does not mention the evolved giant as the target, nor does it describe the result as a massive earthquake.

Electrified Sword

According to A History of Rislandia, the electrified sword was used by James Gentry to kill Takala in the arena. This is consistent with the novel-based account on this page's account of James driving an electrified sword into Takala's side, producing electrical impulses that sparked on Takala and set his tunic on fire. The sourcebook does not add new mechanical detail but confirms the kill attribution, which the novel-based account on this page describes as a result of the electrical discharge rather than explicitly naming it as the killing blow. No direct conflict is recorded, though the sourcebook's phrasing is more definitive.

Mechanized Cities (Nyanzi)

According to A History of Rislandia, Nyanzi developed a class of structures described as mechanized cities: buildings and structures that can move or transform. The sourcebook describes them as "Buildings and structures that can move or transform." This technology is attributed to Nyanzi and is not catalogued on the novel-based account on this page. It represents a category of large-scale mechanical engineering distinct from the portable or shipboard devices documented elsewhere on this page.
