Fate Crystals (Time Shards)
Overview
Fate Crystals — also called Time Shards, and known in ancient usage as Chronazel — are among the rarest and most dangerous magical substances recorded in the history of Areth. According to A History of Rislandia, they were formed directly from the essence of the divine being Chronazel during The Great Sacrifice, the cosmological event that shaped the fundamental forces of the world. The sourcebook states: "Chronazel became the Fate Crystals (or Time Shards), granting glimpses of destiny."
They are most closely associated with The Fae and the Chronists, the two groups historically most involved in their study and use.
Description
According to A History of Rislandia, Fate Crystals are "silver, translucent with swirling patterns" in appearance. Their interior patterns are said to shift and move, a quality that distinguishes them from inert mineral crystals. They are extremely rare in the wider world, with the majority of known specimens found within Fae territories.
Properties and Uses
Fate Crystals are recorded as serving two primary functions: divination and time perception manipulation. Practitioners have used them to see possible futures and to slow or speed their own perception of time. A History of Rislandia notes that The Giants employed them during an earlier age to delve into the nature of time itself, suggesting the crystals' use predates recorded Rislandian history.
Despite their power, the visions produced by Fate Crystals are explicitly described as unreliable. Overuse of the crystals is documented to cause madness, making them as dangerous to the user as they are valuable.
History
Origins: The Great Sacrifice
According to A History of Rislandia, Fate Crystals came into existence at the moment of The Great Sacrifice, when the divine being Chronazel gave up its essence to become them. This places their origin at the very foundation of the world's current order, contemporaneous with the formation of other divine crystal types.
The sourcebook also records that the Fae themselves owe part of their nature to Chronazel's power. Specifically, A History of Rislandia states that "the Fae were born from Vitarum's Life Crystals merging with Chronazel's Fate Shards," indicating that a related form of the crystals — referred to in that passage as Fate Shards — played a role in the creation of the Fae as a people. Whether "Fate Shards" and "Fate Crystals (Time Shards)" refer to the same substance or a distinct related material is not clarified in the sourcebook.
Use by the Giants
During what records describe as an earlier age, The Giants used Fate Crystals to explore the nature of time. The extent of their research and any consequences of that use are not detailed in A History of Rislandia.
The Chronists
In later history, Fate Crystals became the defining tool of the Chronists, a group whose practices centered on the crystals' divinatory and temporal properties. Magistra Lyria of the Chronists is among the notable figures associated with this tradition.
Legacy and Dangers
Fate Crystals occupy a unique position among the known crystal types of Areth: they are simultaneously a relic of divine origin, a tool of scholarship, and a source of documented psychological harm. Their scarcity, concentrated in Fae territories, has limited their widespread use. The unreliability of the visions they produce and the madness that accompanies overuse have ensured that even those with access to them approach them with caution.
Their connection to both The Fae and the Chronists has made them a subject of ongoing scholarly interest, though the full scope of their capabilities and limitations remains imperfectly understood.
