Gagantemidae

The gagantemidae was a massive serpentine creature native to desert environments, capable of moving beneath sand and dragging prey underground. It was encountered and repelled during events depicted in The Blood of Giants.

Gagantemidae

Gagantemidae

The gagantemidae was a colossal serpentine creature inhabiting desert terrain, known for its ability to travel beneath the surface of sand and ambush prey from below. The name was applied to the creature by Juiyan, who identified it during an encounter described in The Blood of Giants.

Description

The gagantemidae was described as a snake as big as a house. It moved beneath desert sand, causing the ground to heave and sink as it traveled, and was capable of making the sand cave in to great depths. When it surfaced or became agitated, it produced a loud hissing sound described as almost like a roar, and was also observed jumping into the air while hissing and screeching.

According to Juiyan, the gagantemidae would pull its victims underground and feast on them.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, the gagantemidae was encountered in a desert setting, where its subterranean movement caused the ground to heave and the sand to cave in around those present. The creature surfaced, and a snake as big as a house slithered from the hole. It jumped into the air, hissing and screeching, before being confronted by Juiyan, who struck it with an electrical attack from his staff. Repelled by the lightning, the gagantemidae slithered away following the strike.

Juiyan identified the creature by name and warned that it would pull victims underground and consume them if not driven off.

Related Locations

The encounter took place in a desert environment. The Artacala Desert and the Sands of Zarma are desert regions documented elsewhere in the setting and may be relevant to the creature's habitat, though no specific location for this encounter was stated in the text.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, gagantemidae are giant burrowing snakes that emerged in the great deserts of Areth. The sourcebook describes them as creatures that hunt through sand "like water," treating the desert substrate as a fluid medium through which they move to pursue prey — a characterisation consistent with the novels but expressed in more naturalistic, scholarly terms.

The bible groups gagantemidae alongside scorpions and other unnamed stranger things as part of the dangerous fauna of the desert regions, suggesting they are one of several hazardous creature types inhabiting these environments rather than a singular or unique monster.

Known Habitats

According to A History of Rislandia, gagantemidae are specifically documented in two named desert regions:

The Red Desert

The sourcebook records giant snakes (gagantemidae) as inhabitants of the Red Desert. This location is not mentioned in connection with the gagantemidae on the novel-based account on this page.

The Zenwey Desert

The sourcebook also places gagantemidae in the Zenwey Desert, stating that they hunt in its sands. The Zenwey region is documented elsewhere in the setting as a distinct cultural and geographic area.

Aliases and Terminology

According to A History of Rislandia, the creatures are referred to interchangeably as "giant snakes" and "serpent-kin" in addition to the formal designation gagantemidae. The sourcebook appears to treat "gagantemidae" as the scholarly or taxonomic name, with "giant snakes" used as the common vernacular equivalent, as evidenced by the parenthetical construction "Giant snakes (gagantemidae)" employed in the text.
