Greenhorne
Nation: Rislandia Region: Southern Rislandia, near the Wyranth front Appears in: The Steam Knight, The Iron Wedding, The Neverending War
Greenhorne is a Rislandian town "just down the road" from Plainsroad Village. It lies north of Loveridge, on the road between the two towns. During the Wyranth war, the heaviest fighting took place around Greenhorne and Loveridge.
Geography
- The road from Greenhorne to Loveridge runs through a forest. It is less dense than The Old Forest, which lies "to the north" of the road (The Neverending War).
- Greenhorne is close enough to Plainsroad Village that James Gentry, walking out of the forest, guessed he was nearing "Greenhorne or Plainsroad Village" (The Steam Knight).
- In The Steam Knight, James and Ethan ride to Greenhorne and then walk south across the plains toward Loveridge.
History
Liberation
In The Neverending War, Rislandian infantry fought "some of the worst trench warfare combat in the history of Rislandia" on the way to liberate Greenhorne. Afterward, an army encampment with a medical tent stood near the town. From there, Lieutenant Avery's platoon led an advance down the forest road toward Wyranth-held Loveridge, together with the 18th and 47th battalions. On that road the platoon was ambushed by were-rats.
In The Steam Knight, James Gentry notes: "Our forces had advanced into Greenhorne recently, but we hadn't been able to push past the Wyranth lines beyond the town."
The infantry line
In The Iron Wedding, Zaira describes Plainsroad Village as "close to our infantry line between Greenhorne and Loveridge, where the war had its heaviest battles".
Military
The Grand Rislandian Army page lists a Greenhorne Regiment, famous for holding the line during the Wyranth invasion.
In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, Greenhorne is formally known by the epithet "The Fortified Town" and is classified as a mid-sized town with a population of approximately 5,000 — a mix of civilians and soldiers. The sourcebook places Greenhorne in Central Rislandia along the Tillway River, describing it as sitting on a major road and river crossing vital for moving troops and supplies. It also notes mills powered by the Grune River.
The bible states Greenhorne was founded in Year 180 and is associated with Duke Aldric of Greenhorne. The von Lantern family holds estates near the town.
Fortifications and Military Infrastructure
According to A History of Rislandia, Greenhorne contains a stone fortress overlooking the town, garrisoned by more than 500 soldiers and housing an armory, barracks, and command center. The town is described as "increasingly militarized due to its strategic location" and is currently heavily fortified in expectation of future conflicts. It serves as a logistics hub for the Grand Rislandian Army.
Town Layout
Beyond its military infrastructure, the sourcebook notes that Greenhorne features a market square, shops, homes, and river docks for barges.
The Battle of Greenhorne
The sourcebook records a major battle at Greenhorne during the Wyranth invasion, cross-referenced on the Battle of Greenhorne page. An unnamed soldier's account preserved in the bible describes trench warfare, gas attacks, and hand-to-hand combat. Rislandian forces recaptured the town in a fierce fight. This account aligns broadly with the novels' depiction of brutal trench warfare, though
The Treaty of Greenhorne
According to A History of Rislandia, Greenhorne was the site of the Treaty of Greenhorne, signed in Year 383.
