The von Lantern family is one of Rislandia's oldest noble lines, tracing their origins to a lieutenant of Captain Cedric Ironhelm who accompanied Jory Malaky across the mountains at the founding of the kingdom. They maintained their status through centuries of consistent military service and were, as of Year 445, headed by Lord Marcus von Lantern, a retired general.

Overview

The von Lantern family stood among the oldest and most distinguished noble houses in Rislandia. According to A History of Rislandia, they were "one of the few families who had accompanied Jory Malaky across the mountains," placing their origins at the very founding of the Rislandian kingdom. In the centuries that followed, the von Lanterns maintained their noble status without interruption, earning a reputation as an exemplar of old nobility done right through consistent and honorable service.

History

Founding Origins

According to A History of Rislandia, the von Lantern line descended from a lieutenant of Captain Cedric Ironhelm, the celebrated military commander who served alongside Jory Malaky during the founding exodus. This lieutenant was among the small number of individuals who made the crossing of the mountains with Malaky, a distinction that granted the family an enduring claim to ancient noble standing within the Malaky dynasty.

Centuries of Military Service

From their founding generation onward, the von Lanterns served in every major Rislandian military campaign. A History of Rislandia records that the family maintained this tradition across all the intervening centuries between the founding and Year 445, never retreating from their obligations to the crown. The family was consistently associated with the virtues of honor, courage, and loyalty.

The Current Generation (Year 445)

By Year 445, the head of the family was Lord Marcus von Lantern, aged fifty, a retired general. According to A History of Rislandia, his sons were expected to continue the military tradition that had defined the family for generations. The sourcebook presents the von Lanterns of this era as a living embodiment of what old Rislandian nobility was meant to represent.

Holdings

The von Lantern family held substantial estates near Greenhorne, including a castle overlooking the Grune River and extensive farmlands in the surrounding region. These holdings reflected both the family's long-standing wealth and their deep roots in that part of Rislandia.

Legacy

A History of Rislandia explicitly held up the von Lanterns as a positive model among the Rislandian nobility, describing them as representing "old nobility done right" through their unbroken record of service to the kingdom. Their lineage connected directly to the founding generation, and their conduct across centuries reinforced rather than diminished that founding honor.
