Treaty of Greenhorne
Overview
The Treaty of Greenhorne was a formal peace accord signed in Year 383, bringing the Fantasy War (Years 375-383) to a close. The treaty restored the status quo ante bellum, meaning neither Rislandia nor the Wyranth Empire gained or ceded territory as a result of the conflict. It was signed at Greenhorne, the location that had also lent its name to the Battle of Greenhorne.
Terms
According to A History of Rislandia, the treaty contained three principal provisions:
- Territorial settlement: A return to the pre-war borders, with no territorial changes for either signatory.
- Crystal research limitation: A mutual agreement to limit crystal magic research. The source notes that "neither side could afford arms race," suggesting the restriction was driven by economic exhaustion rather than goodwill alone.
- Prisoner exchanges: Both powers agreed to the return of prisoners of war held during the conflict.
Legacy
Despite the formal prohibition on expanded crystal magic research, the ban did not hold indefinitely. According to A History of Rislandia, King Malaky XIII later violated the crystal research ban quietly, undermining one of the treaty's central pillars without open repudiation. This covert breach had implications for the ongoing technological and military rivalry between the two powers, contributing to the conditions that would shape later conflicts.
The treaty is closely associated with the dedicated Crystal Research Ban that it established, and stands as one of several diplomatic instruments recorded alongside the Treaty of Lake Bethany and the Treaty of Year 341 in the broader history of Rislandian diplomacy.
