King Malaky's Funeral Procession
King Malaky's Funeral Procession was a formal state ceremony held in Rislandia City to honor the memory of King Malaky XV following his death. Organized by palace servants, the procession drew enormous crowds, foreign dignitaries, and representatives of the Grand Rislandian Army, and concluded at the open courtyard at the front of the king's main chamber at King Malaky's Palace.
Description
In The Iron Wedding, the procession was described as moving slowly down a busy street, with an elegant wooden coffin carried by military personnel through the crowds. A military band playing brass instruments accompanied the march, and an honor guard of the Grand Rislandian Army flanked the procession. Crowds stretched down the road as far as Zaira von Monocle could see, attesting to the scale of public mourning.
As the procession reached its terminus at the open courtyard before the king's main chamber, a series of formal rites were observed:
- A woman in a long crimson gown lit a large candle in front of the coffin.
- Queen Reina I laid a wreath atop the coffin, then collapsed and wept openly before it.
- Military men fired three shots into the air in honor of King Malaky XV.
- Zaira's father delivered a speech at a podium equipped with an amplifying device.
Attendance
The procession and its concluding ceremony were attended by a wide array of mourners and dignitaries. Ambassadors from Atrebla and Nyanzi were present, as was various nobility from across Rislandia. The general public lined the streets in great numbers throughout the route.

In The Iron Wedding, the funeral procession served as a significant early event, establishing the political and emotional climate of Rislandia in the aftermath of the assassination of King Malaky XV. The ceremony was witnessed by Zaira von Monocle, through whose perspective many of the details were observed. The attendance of foreign ambassadors at the event also reflected the broader international tensions present throughout the novel.
