King Malaky's Palace

King Malaky's Palace was the royal residence of the Malaky Crown, located in Rislandia City. It was described as "a smaller, though more elegant, bulbous building that sparkled silver in the late night," distinguishing it from larger but less refined structures elsewhere in the region. The palace served as the home of King Malaky XVI and Princess Reina (later Queen Reina I), and functioned across multiple volumes as a refuge, command post, and seat of royal authority. Following the death of King Malaky XVI and the accession of Queen Reina I, the palace continued as the home of the royal family and the seat of government, also housing James Gentry as royal consort.

Description

The palace was adorned throughout with expensive art, vases, statues, and fine furniture. Its ceilings rose higher than anything found in Plainsroad Village, lending the interior a sense of grandeur. The building's exterior had a distinctive bulbous silhouette that shimmered silver under nighttime light.

The palace's long hallway was marked by flowery adornments, tables with statues, and paintings on the wall. As the text of The Fight for Rislandia described it: "The long hallway was still marked by all of the flowery adornments it always had, tables with statues, paintings on the wall."

Throne Room

The throne room was accessed through large double doors embroidered in gold, with the crimson Malaky crest carved into the wood. The throne itself was simpler than might be expected—an ordinary chair bearing the Malaky crest carved into the backrest, fitted with a matching cushion. One step lower and to the throne's right stood a secondary chair. A long curtain hung behind the throne, concealing a small door leading to the back of the room.

In The Steam Knight, the palace's sitting rooms were described as furnished with plush red couches, exotic flowers, and tapestries.

Formal Reception Room

Role in For Steam and Country

In For Steam and Country, the palace served as a refuge and meeting place for the principal characters following the battle. Zaira von Monocle woke in the royal apartments after the battle, and the group later gathered in the king's banquet room for breakfast. Zaira had visited the palace on at least one prior occasion; a servant who had attended her during that earlier visit greeted her in the hall upon her return.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, the palace took on a dual significance as both a Rislandian command post and a military objective. Zaira von Monocle's father commanded operations from within the palace, using the war room's model of Rislandia and troop markers to plan the campaign. The palace was noted to feel empty without King Malaky XVI and his servants.

The palace also served as the primary objective of the Rislandian forces' assault on Rislandia City. Zaira's father planned a pincer attack, intending to converge on the palace from the north and west, and was observed moving toward it with commandos. The palace came into view as soldiers rounded a street corner near the end of the depicted action. As stated in the text: "We'll form a pincer attack and converge on King Malaky's palace."

The palace was located near the center of Rislandia and was approached via the streets of Rislandia City, accessible through large wooden doors guarded by soldiers.

Role in The Steam Knight

In The Steam Knight, the palace continued to serve as the royal residence, housing King Malaky XVI and Princess Reina (later Queen Reina I). Characters passed through its corridors and made use of its various chambers, including the royal tailor's chamber and the sitting rooms. The palace's location in Rislandia City was consistent with its depiction in earlier volumes.
