Malaky Dynasty
Overview
The Malaky Dynasty served as the ruling dynasty of Rislandia for approximately 500 years, from its founding in Year 1 through the reigns of King Malaky I to King Malaky XVI and, subsequently, Queen Reina I. According to A History of Rislandia, the dynasty's record was "not a story of unbroken success," with fifteen kings ruling before Queen Reina I ascended to the throne.
Founding
The dynasty was founded by Jory Malaky in Year 1 of the Malaky Dynasty, the dating system by which Rislandian history is reckoned. According to A History of Rislandia, this founding moment established the calendar still in use.
History
The Reign of Malaky VII and Religious Suppression
One of the most consequential periods in the dynasty's history came approximately 300 years before the novels' present day, during the reign of King Malaky VII. According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky VII suppressed the Church of the Great One and directed a sweeping transformation of public religious life. Religious holidays were repurposed as state festivals honoring the Malaky dynasty, and civic mythology was recentered on the dynasty itself, replacing religious teachings throughout Rislandia. As the sourcebook states, "civic mythology centered on the Malaky dynasty" became the dominant framework of public life in the kingdom.
Later Reigns and the Succession of Queen Reina I
The dynasty continued through a succession of sixteen kings before Queen Reina I became the first queen regnant of Rislandia. According to A History of Rislandia, "From Malaky I to Malaky XVI (and now Queen Reina I), the dynasty has ruled Rislandia for 500 years."
Legacy
The Malaky Dynasty shaped Rislandian society at its deepest levels. The suppression of the Church of the Great One under King Malaky VII and the replacement of religious observance with state festivals left a lasting imprint on Rislandian culture and civic identity. The dynasty's 500-year span encompassed the Rislandian Calendar, major military conflicts including the Wyranth conquest of Tyndree in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's reign, and the eventual transition to a queen regnant in the person of Queen Reina I.
