King Malaky I (Cedric Malaky)
Cedric Malaky was the first King of Rislandia, reigning from Year 42 to Year 81. The son of Jory Malaky, he came to power through an electoral process held six months after his father's death and went on to establish the institutional framework upon which the Malaky Dynasty was built.
Early Life and Background
According to A History of Rislandia, Cedric Malaky was the son of Jory Malaky, the leader of the exodus that founded the Rislandian settlement. Before his election, Cedric served as an administrator and engineer, and is also referred to in an earlier context as Captain Cedric Ironhelm. At the time of his father's death in Year 42, Cedric was 35 years old.
Election and Coronation
According to A History of Rislandia, six months after Jory Malaky's death, an assembly convened to choose a leader for the young nation. Cedric was one of three candidates. The vote was cast by guild representatives, church leaders, military officers, and elected citizen delegates. The sourcebook states that "Cedric Malaky won—not because of his father's name, but because he embodied Jory's ideals," combining both idealism and pragmatism in a way that distinguished him from the other candidates.
Following his election, Cedric was crowned atop the Crystal Spire by Bishop Marcus. He chose to rule under the regnal name Malaky in honor of his father and to establish a lasting dynasty, becoming King Malaky I. At his coronation he swore the oath: "I will serve the kingdom. I will uphold the law. I will protect the weak and honor the Great One. For Rislandia."
Reign (Years 42–81)
According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky I was described as practical, patient, fair, devout, and uncharismatic. He was not a great speaker, but was regarded as competent and steady. He attended services weekly and consulted the Church of the Great One on ethical matters throughout his reign.
His reign was defined by a series of major nation-building initiatives:
Road Network (Years 45–60)
Malaky I commissioned the construction of a road network across the kingdom, improving connectivity between settlements and enabling trade and military movement.
Guild Revival (Years 48–75)
He oversaw the revival of the guild system, which had roots in the earlier Orethan Dominion. The Guild Revival spanned much of his reign and helped organize skilled labor and commerce within Rislandia.
Agricultural Expansion (Years 50–70)
Under his direction, agricultural development was expanded significantly, providing the food security necessary to sustain the growing kingdom.
Legal Code (Year 55)
In Year 55, Malaky I codified the Legal Code of Rislandia, establishing a formal body of law for the kingdom. This act is among his most enduring contributions to Rislandian governance.
Diplomatic Outreach (Year 65)
In Year 65, Malaky I sent envoys to establish relations with the settlers of Portsgate, marking one of the kingdom's earliest formal diplomatic efforts.
Death and Succession
According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky I died in Year 81 at the age of 74, having reigned for 39 years. He was succeeded by his son, King Malaky II.
Legacy
According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky I is remembered as "a good king who built well, not a great king." He embodied Jory Malaky's ideals while demonstrating the practical leadership needed to transform a fledgling settlement into a functioning kingdom. His epithet, "the Builder," reflects the lasting physical and institutional infrastructure he left behind. The dynasty he named and the oath he swore at his coronation remained touchstones of Rislandian royal tradition through the reigns of his many successors, up to and including King Malaky XVI.
