Knights of the Crystal Spire

The Knights of the Crystal Spire were Rislandia's elite warrior order, functioning as special forces, royal bodyguards, and champions of the realm. Headquartered at The Crystal Spire in Rislandia City, the order was widely regarded as housing some of the greatest military minds in the world. The order usually operated independently, left to their own devices and serving directly at the whim of the king, and was led by the High Knight of Rislandia. The order totaled approximately four hundred knights in strength, though during the war most journeymen and above were out on assignment, leaving only a few knights behind to train the next generation. The order was hated by the Wyranth Empire.

Overview

Founded in Year 8 of the reign of Jory Malaky by Aldric—one of Malaky's companions—the Knights of the Crystal Spire maintained a tradition of excellence, discipline, and sacrifice across generations. The order upheld a long-standing tradition of honor and was loyal to the king, known to rely on unconventional methods and equipment to gain tactical advantages in the field, including devices such as the tinsomatic screecher, used to create chaos during operations. Their importance to the kingdom was underscored by the assessment that, without them and the crew of The Liliana, Rislandia itself might have fallen.

The order was described as taking almost too much joy in fighting, yet remaining steadfastly loyal to the crown. Their skills in infiltration and unconventional warfare were considered a benchmark of excellence; in The Blood of Giants, the Iron Emperor's infiltration abilities were compared favorably to those of the Knights. The Knights also engaged in espionage missions from time to time.

Membership in the order was drawn from noble lines. Recruits underwent standard classes including study of the history of the Rislandia-Wyranth peninsula, though in wartime some members were pressed into service and bypassed standard training. Entry could be initiated by testing conducted by senior members of the order after a candidate's abilities were identified. The order offered a crucial support role to the Grand Rislandian Army and served under the High Knight and King Malaky XVI. Many knights did not have significant others due to the demands of service.

Code of Honor

The order upheld the principles of duty, loyalty, sacrifice, and justice, and maintained a long-standing tradition of honor. Strong bonds among members were maintained regardless of background, and the code established by founder Aldric remained in practice throughout the order's history. The Knights were described as fiercely loyal to the king above all else. According to James Gentry, knighthood comes through experience.

Traditions

  • New recruits performed chore duty including dishes, cleaning, and latrines, while also running messages in full armor. The demanding apprenticeship drove several apprentices to quit.
  • Apprentices trained with wooden swords and later with armor, and also performed copying and scribe work.
  • Apprentices cleaned latrines, scrubbed floors, and carried messages for knights.
  • Apprentices were previously housed four to a room in barracks and used to race to the top of the Crystal Spire to keep in shape. During the war, apprentices were kept in teams so they were not alone against the Nightmen.
  • Each journeyman knight carried a personal sword and pistol.
  • The Vigil: A ritual performed atop the Crystal Spire before major missions.
  • Promotion Ritual: A ceremony involving masked abduction and a formal ceremony atop the Crystal Spire.
  • Standard training included classes on the history of the Rislandia-Wyranth peninsula.
  • The order was founded by Aldric, one of Jory Malaky's companions, and his sword, "Oathkeeper," was displayed as a sacred relic.

History

The Knights of the Crystal Spire were established in Year 8 of Jory Malaky's reign by Aldric, who created the three-rank system and the knightly code still followed in subsequent generations. Aldric served as the order's first High Knight, and his sword, "Oathkeeper," was preserved as a sacred relic of the order.

In the years preceding the events of For Steam and Country, the Knights fought alongside the Grand Rislandian Army at the Border River, described as one of the worst engagements either force had ever endured. A squad of Knights was delivered to the Border River on that mission, and a ship was reported to have been boarded during the fighting.

Role in For Steam and Country

During the events of For Steam and Country, the Knights of the Crystal Spire played a significant role in the defense of Rislandia. The order came to rescue Zaira von Monocle and her companions when their own rescue attempt had failed, employing a tinsomatic screecher to create chaos during the operation. It was noted that without the Knights and the crew of The Liliana, Rislandia might have fallen.

James Gentry harbored a long-standing dream of joining the order. Queen Reina I promised to recommend his name to the High Knight, and the order provided a trainer for James on each of the three preparation days before a key mission. Upon his return from the Devil's Mountain mission, James was promoted to the rank of full Knight of the Spire. Cid and Frances were also members of the order during this period.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, James Gentry was serving as an apprentice knight within the order and had begun formal training with the Knights of the Crystal Spire. His training schedule made him largely unavailable to Zaira von Monocle, who noted that since he began his training with the Knights, she had hardly been able to see him. Ethan von Lantern was identified as a journeyman knight in the order during this period, and Cid continued as a member.

The order's reputation for infiltration was referenced when the Iron Emperor's skills were described as akin to those of the Knights of the Crystal Spire.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, James Gentry and Ethan von Lantern continued as members of the order. Following a mission, both were required to report to Cid and the High Knight. The order was brought into army meetings during this period, an occurrence noted as an indicator of a particularly dire situation, given that the Knights ordinarily operated independently and served directly at the whim of the king rather than in coordination with the broader military command.

Before the crew departed for Zenwey, a spy was uncovered within the Knights of the Crystal Spire, representing a significant breach of the order's security. At least two Knights sustained injuries during the events of this period, described as coming down a ramp while wounded.

Ethan von Lantern's path into the order was also elaborated upon: he had been tested for entry by Cid after his athletic abilities were spotted, and was subsequently pressed into service, bypassing the standard classes that recruits would ordinarily complete, due to the demands of the ongoing war.

In A History of Rislandia

A History of Rislandia provides both historical context and institutional detail about the Knights of the Crystal Spire that supplements and in one significant respect contradicts the account given in the novels.

Founding and Origins

According to A History of Rislandia, the Knights of the Crystal Spire were established as an elite military order by King Malaky V in Year 170 of the Malaky Dynasty, modeled on the old elite guilds of the Orethan Dominion. The sourcebook describes them as warriors trained in combat, tactics, and espionage, sworn to protect the crown and kingdom.

This account conflicts with the founding given elsewhere on this page.

The sourcebook also preserves the tradition—consistent with the novels—that Aldric founded the order in Year 8 of Jory Malaky's reign, established the three-rank system and the knightly code, and that his sword Oathkeeper is displayed in the Crystal Spire as a sacred relic. The Vigil atop the Crystal Spire is likewise attributed to Aldric as a founding tradition. A History of Rislandia does not resolve the contradiction between these two founding accounts.

Membership and Size

The order comprised approximately four hundred knights at any given time.

The sourcebook confirms that membership is organized into three ranks—Apprentice, Journeyman Knight, and Full Knight (also called Master)—and adds the following detail not found in the novels:

  • Apprentices are ages 14–18, learning combat, tactics, and the knightly code.
  • Promotion from Apprentice to Journeyman requires completing a dangerous mission as well as a hazing ritual.
  • Promotion from Journeyman to Full Knight requires years of service and exceptional valor.
  • Promotion from Full Knight to Master requires taking on an apprentice and demonstrating leadership.
  • Upon promotion to Journeyman, each knight receives a custom-forged sword bearing the Crest of Malaky.
  • Knights address one another as "brother" or "sister".

Leadership is described as comprising the High Knight, Master Knights, and a Council—the Council being an institutional body not mentioned in the novels.

Military History

A History of Rislandia records several historical operations of the Knights not covered in the novels:

  • The Knights were deployed to the Border River for border patrol in Year 3 of King Malaky XVI's reign, consistent with the novels.
  • During the Rislandian counteroffensive in Year 338, the Knights destroyed Wyranth artillery.
  • During the Fantasy War (Years 375–383), the Knights learned to use air crystals for flight, described as "primitive and dangerous." This occurred in Year 376.
  • On Day 13 of the Month of the Fool, the Knights successfully destroyed Wyranth artillery during a winter campaign, though many good men died in the assault.
  • On Day 15 of the Month of the Fool, the Knights were dropped behind enemy lines by The Liliana on a second mission to eliminate Wyranth commanders, which they accomplished successfully.
  • On Day 12 of the Month of Princesses, the deck of The Liliana was filled with knights, straining the ship's engines.

The Ghosts of the Crystal Spire and Unwritten Rules

A History of Rislandia records a body of lore surrounding the Crystal Spire that is whispered among the Knights, particularly to new apprentices during their first nights in the tower. The sourcebook notes that some claim this is merely hazing, while others swear it is true, and that some knights and scholars have disappeared near or within the tower over the centuries.

The Knights are said to follow certain unwritten rules regarding the Spire:

  • Never walk the upper floors alone after midnight.
  • Return to the lower levels if unexplained footsteps are heard.
  • Turn around and leave if the Shadow is encountered.
  • Never attempt to open the Locked Door.
  • Do not answer if your name is called in an unfamiliar voice.

The sourcebook states these rules have kept the knights safe for generations.

Training Grounds

A History of Rislandia specifies that the Knights train in the Knights' Courtyard surrounding the Crystal Spire in Rislandia City, a detail not given in the novels.
