Minor Locations of The Steam Knight
The following locations appear in The Steam Knight in supporting roles. Each entry documents what the text establishes about the place, its geography, and its relevance to the events of the novel.
Brighton
Brighton was the home of Dr. von Breech's laboratory. In The Steam Knight, Dr. von Breech stated that he had been travelling from Brighton to Rislandia City when he was turned back. The text does not specify Brighton's precise location within the kingdom.
"I was on my way to Rislandia City from my lab in Brighton."
Dovetail Tavern
The Dovetail Tavern was a tavern located in Rislandia City. It featured frosted windows, an A-frame roof with a hatch on top, and wooden rafters inside. In The Steam Knight, the spy Lou met Marcus there to pass military intelligence. On the evening James Gentry followed Lou to the tavern, the establishment was full of patrons.
"After Lou went inside the Dovetail Tavern, I moved forward to see what he was up to."
Edmon
Edmon was the site of an annual gathering attended by representatives of both Rislandia and Atrebla. In The Steam Knight, King Malaky XVI expressed regret at having missed the previous year's gathering due to the war. Ambassador Sheila McRose remarked that Rislandia brought the life of the party to the event. The text does not specify Edmon's location or political affiliation.
"I am sad I missed our annual gathering in Edmon."
Greenhorne
Greenhorne was a town situated just down the road from Plainsroad Village. In The Steam Knight, Rislandian forces had recently advanced into Greenhorne, and the Wyranth lines could not be pushed further beyond it. As a result of this advance, Wyranth forces were cut off near Plainsroad Village. James Gentry reasoned that, as the forest thinned, they had to be drawing closer to Greenhorne or Plainsroad Village, with the Wyranth army likely nearby.
"Our forces had advanced into Greenhorne recently" "closer to Greenhorne or Plainsroad Village at this point"
Highview City
Highview City was the home city of Reginald du Current, a noble of Rislandia. It was situated in the foothills of the Oler Mountains at the very northeast corner of the kingdom.
"Reginald was a noble from Highview City, a place in the foothills of the Oler Mountains at the very northeast corner of the kingdom."
King Malaky's Lakeside Retreat
Also known as: the compound, the estate, the king's retreat.
The lakeside retreat was King Malaky XVI's private retreat and served as the setting for a diplomatic meeting depicted in The Steam Knight. The compound overlooked a lake and included a front room with a hearth, a deck area, a back porch with steps, a leftmost wing, upstairs private chambers reserved for the king, and a nearby forest path. Guards were posted on night watch around the estate.
Perryton
Perryton was a place known for the cultivation of coffee beans. In The Steam Knight, coffee from Perryton was described as an expensive import in other parts of the world.
"Coffee beans were grown out in Perryton."
Zarma
Zarma was a location along Atrebla's northern countryside. In The Steam Knight, the area was noted as being troubled by goblins. See also Goblins of Zarma and Sands of Zarma.
"We already have enough trouble with the goblins along our northern countryside by Zarma."
