In the short stories

In Island of the Fae, Count Eberle serves Theodore spicy tea from "Perrtyon", which is treated as a typo for Perryton.

On the world map

On the official world map, Perryton is a yellow region south of Artrebla and west of Rescall, with a city dot. Perry's Gulf lies below it, and red Nyanzi borders it to the south-west, consistent with the texts calling the two neighbours.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, Perryton has a far deeper history than the novels suggest, originating in the ancient geography of Areth itself and maintaining documented relations with Rislandia stretching back centuries.

Origins and Ancient History

According to A History of Rislandia, the region now called Perryton was originally known as "the Eastern Coasts" and later as "the Frontier Confederation." It is located on the eastern coasts of the southern continent, where humans first emerged along fertile coastlines and river valleys. The sourcebook attributes the character of these early inhabitants to the influence of Aquenis's water essence, which shaped them into sailors, fishermen, and river traders. They built wooden cities on stilts above the tides and developed maritime traditions and navigation skills that would define Perryton culture for millennia.

The region is identified as part of the eastern river delta territory of the former Orethan Dominion, and Perryton as a nation claims descent from that ancient empire — referred to in the sourcebook as the Shattered Empire.

The Dragon's Bargain and Maritime Lore

According to A History of Rislandia, Perryton is one of the coastal regions where the legend known as The Dragon's Bargain is told. Sailors there claim to have seen dragons flying over the ocean, a tradition shared with Portsgate.

The sourcebook also records that the merchant ship Windward was sailing from Perryton to Panderica when it was blown off course, placing Perryton within established trans-oceanic trade routes.

Relations with Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, Perryton's connection to Rislandia is ancient and formally documented. In Year 65 of the Rislandian calendar, a wave of sailors from Perryton arrived on Rislandia's western coast, having fled conflicts in their homeland approximately 200 years after Jory Malaky's original exodus. These settlers were skilled shipbuilders and fishermen who sought new opportunities and maintained a distinct cultural identity after settling the western coast around Portsgate. The colorful architecture of Portsgate is said to reflect Perryton heritage directly.

Formal trade relations between Rislandia and Perryton were established during the reign of King Malaky III (Years 108–125). A permanent Rislandian embassy in Perryton was established in Year 205 under King Malaky VI. King Aldous III of Tyndree is also noted to have established diplomatic relations with Perryton at some point.

Geography and the City of Aquilae

According to A History of Rislandia, Perryton is located in Eastern Areth along the coast, characterized by coastal plains, river valleys, and natural harbors. Its climate is described as temperate and maritime with frequent rain. The sourcebook identifies Aquilae as a location within Perryton. An underwater ruin is noted to lie off Perryton's coast. Perry's Gulf is associated with the region.

Government and Society

According to A History of Rislandia, Perryton is governed as a confederation of coastal city-states rather than a unified monarchy. Each city-state governs itself through elected city councils, with a loose alliance maintained for mutual defense and trade. Perryton merchant guilds control trade, shipbuilding, and economic policy alongside the Perryton city councils. The sourcebook notes that Perryton has a less rigid class structure than other kingdoms, with merit mattering more than birth.

The population is given as approximately 300,000, with the capital, Harbortown, holding an estimated population of approximately 50,000.

Primary industries include fishing, shipbuilding, maritime trade, and agriculture. Whaling is described as a dangerous but profitable industry. Perryton merchants are said to be found in ports across the world, and Perryton ships have explored much of the known world.

Culture

According to A History of Rislandia, the Perryton people are known for maritime traditions, independence, trade, adaptability, music, and art. Sea shanties are described as work songs sung by sailors and fishermen. Practical clothing — loose shirts, trousers, and wide-brimmed hats — is standard. Cuisine includes seafood, meat pies, damper bread, and strong tea, and pubs and taverns serve as social centers. The sourcebook characterizes Perryton culture as reminiscent of 1800s Australia, with a frontier spirit and values of freedom, equality, pragmatism, adventure, and mateship. Perryton cultural traditions are said to be preserved in Portsgate and other coastal Rislandian towns. A dish called Coastal Paella is associated with Perryton culinary influence.

Military

According to A History of Rislandia, each Perryton city-state maintains a citizen militia, and small but skilled naval forces protect trade routes. Privateers — described as licensed pirates — are sanctioned to raid enemy shipping.
