Renawl, the One-Eyed King
Renawl, commonly known as the One-Eyed King, was a pirate lord and self-styled ruler who established a domain along the Ebony Sands Coast peninsula. He sustained what he considered a king's life through thieving and pillaging. His visage was imprinted on one side of a gold coin minted on the Ebony Sands Coast, attesting to the degree of authority he commanded in that region.
Description
Renawl's face appeared on the heads side of a gold coin from the Ebony Sands Coast, suggesting he held enough local power to have currency struck in his likeness. He was described as "the face of a man known as the One-Eyed King." His epithet referred to the loss of one eye, though he had possessed both eyes prior to his encounter with Baron Theodore von Monocle.
History
Encounter with Baron von Monocle
In For Steam and Country, Renawl captured Baron Theodore von Monocle and placed him in shackles, holding a knife to the Baron's throat with the intention of slaying him. At this point in events, Renawl still had both eyes; as the text noted, "the One-Eyed King had two eyes at this point, he hadn't earned his name yet."
The Baron, rather than submitting to his fate, feigned admiration for Renawl and offered to serve him as a mercenary, deceiving him into staying his hand. During the confrontation—while still restrained in shackles—the Baron drove a knife into one of Renawl's eyes, costing him the organ and ultimately giving rise to the epithet by which he would thereafter be known.
Role in The Blood of Giants
In The Blood of Giants, the Liliana travelled to Renawl's domain on the Ebony Sands Coast. Baron Theodore von Monocle again employed the ruse of convincing Renawl that he would serve him as a mercenary, and Renawl imprisoned Theodore as part of that arrangement. Theodore subsequently escaped with the assistance of his crew.
Legacy
Renawl's likeness on the gold coinage of the Ebony Sands Coast served as a lasting marker of the dominion he had carved out through piracy. His name and title endured as a consequence of the wound inflicted upon him by Baron Theodore von Monocle.
