2nd Wyranth War
Spoiler: The Crystal Conspiracy & The Steam Knight 2
This section reveals events from “The Crystal Conspiracy” and “The Steam Knight 2”.
Overview
The 2nd Wyranth War represented a renewed period of hostilities between the Wyranth Empire and Rislandia. The conflict caused widespread destruction across Rislandia—including the leveling of Portsgate, damage to Portsgate's reservoir dam, the razing of Shellville and surrounding farmland, the assault on Plainsroad Village, and the destruction of crops—and had significant strategic and economic consequences, including the disruption of Rislandia City's supply of aether fuel and the loss of Rislandia's crops and foodstuffs.
The war also inflicted losses among the Knights of the Crystal Spire and prompted the activation of new knights, including James Gentry. Combat conditions included trench warfare, with soldiers enduring mud and artillery bombardment.
In The Steam Knight, the war was described as going disastrously for Rislandia, with Wyranth forces at the gates of Rislandia City and the kingdom on the verge of losing its capital. King Malaky XVI sought food, supplies, and troops from Atrebla in response to the crisis, and the war's intensification over the preceding year had kept him heavily preoccupied.

A separate, earlier conflict is also referenced in the sources as a "first Wyranth invasion," during which Harkerpal lost track of Dr. Busse. The relationship between this earlier invasion and the 2nd Wyranth War as a named conflict has not been fully documented on this page.

Outbreak
In The Blood of Giants, the 2nd Wyranth War began in the 16th Year of King Malaky XVI's reign. Further details of the war's causes and major early engagements are not yet fully documented on this page.
Wyranth Invasion and Its Consequences
During the invasion, Wyranth forces razed farmland, Shellville, and Portsgate, and assaulted Plainsroad Village. Portsgate's reservoir dam was damaged during the conflict. Crops were destroyed across Rislandia. The destruction cut off Rislandia City's supply of aether fuel, with significant consequences for the city and the broader kingdom. In The Iron Wedding, the Wyranth invasion is described as a recent event at the time of the novel's action.

Escalation: Wyranth Forces at Rislandia City
In The Steam Knight, the war was described as having gone disastrously for Rislandia. Wyranth forces had advanced to the gates of Rislandia City itself, placing the kingdom on the verge of losing its capital: "It's been disastrous. We're on the verge of losing Rislandia City." The war had heated up significantly in the year preceding the novel's events, keeping King Malaky XVI preoccupied and prompting him to seek food, supplies, and troops from Atrebla.
Role in The Blood of Giants
The 2nd Wyranth War is introduced in The Blood of Giants, where its commencement is explicitly noted. The war serves as a central backdrop to the events of that volume.
Role in The Steam Knight
In The Steam Knight, the 2nd Wyranth War was depicted at a critical and desperate stage. The conflict was described as going disastrously for Rislandia, with Wyranth forces pressing to the gates of Rislandia City. King Malaky XVI was shown seeking outside assistance—food, supplies, and troops—from Atrebla as the kingdom struggled to mount an effective defense. The war's intensification over the prior year had consumed much of the king's attention and resources.

Role in The Iron Wedding
In The Iron Wedding, the aftermath of the Wyranth invasion is a recurring point of reference. Characters acknowledged the destruction wrought upon Shellville, Portsgate, and surrounding farmland, as well as the disruption to Rislandia City's aether fuel supply. Zaira von Monocle cited the invasion as a formative experience that altered her perception of the real world's limitations. The conflict was also noted as having preceded the diplomatic negotiations depicted in that volume.
