Volatile Explosive

The volatile explosive was a powerful weapon developed by Rislandian scientists and transported aboard the airship the Liliana with the intention of being dropped on Wyranth positions. It proved too unstable to reach its target, detonating prematurely in the sky, but the resulting explosion nonetheless panicked Wyranth forces into retreat.

Volatile Explosive

The volatile explosive was a weapon of considerable destructive potential developed by Rislandian scientists and deployed—if briefly—during operations against the Wyranth Empire. Though it failed to function as intended, its accidental detonation produced a strategically significant outcome.

Overview

According to A History of Rislandia, the volatile explosive was described as "a highly volatile explosive capable of massive damage." It was developed by Rislandian scientists and represented one of the more ambitious weapons conceived for use against Wyranth military positions. Its extreme instability, however, made it a dangerous cargo and ultimately prevented it from being employed as planned.

History

Development and Transport

The volatile explosive was developed by Rislandian scientists, with its readiness recorded on Day 10 of the Month of Princesses. The weapon was assigned for transport aboard the Liliana, the airship associated with Baron Theodore von Monocle. The Liliana's first officer expressed discomfort at the prospect of carrying such an unstable payload; nevertheless, the Baron agreed to transport it.

Planned Deployment

The intended plan called for the explosive to be dropped onto Wyranth positions while the Knights of the Crystal Spire simultaneously moved to destroy Wyranth artillery. The coordinated strike was designed to maximise the disruption to enemy forces.

Premature Detonation

On Day 13 of the Month of Princesses—three days after the weapon was taken aboard—the volatile explosive proved too unstable to be delivered to its target. It detonated in the sky before reaching the ground. The Liliana sustained no damage from the explosion. Despite the failure of the delivery, the detonation high in the heavens had an unintended but decisive effect: the spectacle panicked the Wyranth forces below, who subsequently retreated to Desert's Watch.

Legacy

The volatile explosive stands as an example of a weapon that failed in its intended purpose yet succeeded in producing a favourable military outcome through unintended means. The retreat of Wyranth forces to Desert's Watch following the aerial detonation altered the immediate strategic situation, demonstrating that even a malfunction could carry battlefield consequences.
