Aldric, First High Knight of the Crystal Spire

Aldric, known posthumously as the First High Knight of the Crystal Spire and the Founder of the Order, was one of Jory Malaky's most trusted companions during the founding era of Rislandia. According to A History of Rislandia, he was a former Atreblan knight who played a central role in leading the refugee exodus across the mountains before going on to shape the military and moral character of the new kingdom.

History

The Exodus and Early Service

According to A History of Rislandia, Aldric served as a knight of Atrebla before joining Jory Malaky's cause. During the exodus, he helped lead the refugees across the mountains, serving as both a military protector and a figure of steadying authority during the perilous journey. His loyalty to Malaky during this period established him as one of the founding generation's most indispensable figures.

Founding of the Knights of the Crystal Spire

In Year 8 of Jory Malaky's time leading the new kingdom, Aldric formally established the Knights of the Crystal Spire as an elite order of the new kingdom. According to A History of Rislandia, he created the three-rank system — comprising the ranks of Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master — which structured the order's hierarchy and progression from its earliest days. He also developed the knightly code of honor that the order continued to follow in subsequent centuries, and instituted the tradition of the Vigil atop the Crystal Spire.

Aldric personally trained the first generation of Rislandian knights, instilling in them the principles he held as foundational to honorable service. His guiding maxim, recorded in A History of Rislandia, was: "strength without honor is tyranny."

Defense Against the Bandit Uprising

In Year 12 of Jory Malaky's time leading the new kingdom, Aldric led the defense against the first major bandit uprising to threaten the young kingdom. According to A History of Rislandia, this campaign tested the newly formed order under real conditions and demonstrated the effectiveness of the knightly structure Aldric had built.

Death

According to A History of Rislandia, Aldric was killed in battle at the age of 54 while defending Jory Malaky from assassins sent by rival Atreblan factions. He died in direct service to the man he had followed since the exodus, and his death was consistent with the principles he had spent his life teaching.

Character

According to A History of Rislandia, Aldric was stern, honorable, and deeply devoted to duty. He was known for his unwavering principles and his belief that power exercised without moral grounding constituted tyranny. These qualities shaped not only the Knights of the Crystal Spire as an institution but also the broader culture of Rislandian military service.

Legacy

Aldric's sword, Oathkeeper, is preserved and displayed in the Crystal Spire as a sacred relic of the order he founded. The three-rank system, the knightly code, and the tradition of the Vigil he established all endured as living institutions within the Knights of the Crystal Spire long after his death. He is remembered in Rislandian tradition under the titles First High Knight of the Crystal Spire and the Founder of the Order.
