Atreblans
The Atreblans are a people described in A History of Rislandia as "refined," possessing a distinct cultural identity expressed through hereditary noble houses, a powerful monastic system, knightly orders, and a rich tradition of folklore. Their diaspora shaped the founding of both Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire.
History
Founding of Rislandia (Year 1)
According to A History of Rislandia, Atreblan refugees joined Jory Malaky in founding Rislandia City in Year 1, seeking a fresh start. The sourcebook describes the founding as having occurred "500 years ago" and characterizes the settlers as refugees in search of new beginnings. The Royal Palace was subsequently built in the Atreblan style, featuring white stone, arched windows, and gardens — a lasting architectural testament to the founders' origins.
Southern Atreblan Refugees and the Wyranth Schism (Year 73)
According to A History of Rislandia, a distinct group of southern Atreblan refugees who rejected Rislandian rule founded what would become the Wyranth Empire in Year 73, establishing their capital city at that time. A separate note in the sourcebook states that "Atreblan refugees founded the Wyranth Empire 430 years ago after rejecting Rislandian rule," which, if the novels are set approximately 500 years after Year 1, would place this founding near Year 70–73 — broadly consistent with the Year 73 date given elsewhere.
Society and Culture
Nobility and Monastic Orders
According to A History of Rislandia, Atrebla maintains a traditional nobility composed of ancient families holding hereditary titles. Alongside this noble structure, a powerful monastic system operates monasteries that serve as centers of learning, art, and religious practice. Knightly orders serve the king and defend the realm, forming a third pillar of Atreblan society alongside the nobility and the monasteries.
Atreblan Monks
The sourcebook references Atreblan monks who chanted seven words each morning as a devotional practice. In the novels, Harkerpal invoked this tradition when suggesting a battle cry for the crew of The Liliana, comparing the proposed chant to the monks' morning ritual.
Religion
According to A History of Rislandia, Atreblan immigrants to Rislandia may still worship "the Great One," suggesting continuity of their traditional faith within the broader Rislandian religious landscape. The Church of the Great One is the institution associated with this belief.
Folklore
The Atreblans maintained their own regional variants of widespread Areth legends, substituting local figures and spirits for those found in other cultural traditions.
The Goblin in the Well
In Atreblan versions of The Goblin in the Well, the goblin is replaced by a "shadow-man" or "cave-dweller," reflecting a cultural preference for shadowy or subterranean antagonists over the goblin figure common elsewhere.
The Fae Island Legend
In Atreblan versions of the legend of The Fae Island, the Fae are replaced by "forest spirits" or "mountain ghosts," grounding the supernatural in the natural landscape rather than in the courts of the Fae.
The Cottage in the Woods
Atreblan culture maintained its own version of the Cottage in the Woods story, found across Areth. In Atreblan tellings, the were-creature common to other versions is replaced by a forest witch or shadow-beast. This variant is documented in A History of Rislandia alongside other regional folklore traditions.
