Battle of Pleasant Pass

The Battle of Pleasant Pass was a major engagement fought at Pleasant Pass in the Westerly Spine during the First Wyranth War (Year 337), in which Wyranth forces pushed through the pass before being repelled by airship bombardment, including the loss of the airship Kerli. A separate battle of the same name occurred in Year 439 during the Wyranth War of Years 437-442, in which Frederick von Monocle is recorded as a participant.

Battle of Pleasant Pass

The name "Battle of Pleasant Pass" refers to at least two distinct engagements fought at Pleasant Pass in the Westerly Spine, separated by more than a century of Rislandian history. Both battles involved conflict between Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire, and both left a lasting mark on the strategic significance of the pass.

Overview

According to A History of Rislandia, the first and more extensively documented engagement took place in Year 337 during the First Wyranth War. A second battle at the same location is recorded in Year 439, during the Wyranth War of Years 437-442. The pass later became a site of civilian evacuation during the Wyranth invasion in the reign of King Malaky XV, underscoring its enduring military importance.

Battle of Pleasant Pass (Year 337)

Background

According to A History of Rislandia, the Year 337 battle occurred during the First Wyranth War and was fought at Pleasant Pass in the Westerly Spine. Prior to the engagement at the pass, Desert's Watch had fallen to Wyranth forces, compelling the airship the Liliana to retreat to Pleasant Pass.

Course of the Battle

Wyranth forces pushed through Pleasant Pass, driving deep into Rislandia before being repelled. The arrival of reinforcements on Day 33 of the engagement — including the sister airship the Kerli — marked a turning point. Rislandian airships conducted a bombardment that ultimately drove back the Wyranth advance.

During the battle, the Kerli was shot down by Wyranth anti-airship artillery, representing a significant loss for the Grand Rislandian Air Force.

Outcome

The Wyranth advance through Pleasant Pass was repelled, though at considerable cost. The destruction of the Kerli demonstrated the growing effectiveness of Wyranth anti-airship capabilities even in a battle ultimately won by Rislandia.

Battle of Pleasant Pass (Year 439)

Background

According to A History of Rislandia, a second Battle of Pleasant Pass was fought in Year 439 during the Wyranth War of Years 437-442. The source records that Frederick von Monocle fought in this battle.

Known Details

Beyond Frederick von Monocle's participation and the date and war context, A History of Rislandia provides no further detail on the course or outcome of the Year 439 engagement.

Legacy

Pleasant Pass retained its strategic importance well beyond both battles. During the Wyranth invasion in the reign of King Malaky XV, the pass was evacuated of civilians, indicating that military planners continued to regard it as a likely axis of enemy advance. The Year 337 battle in particular established the value of airship bombardment in defending mountain passes, a lesson that shaped subsequent Rislandian aerial doctrine.

The loss of the Kerli to Wyranth anti-airship artillery during the First Wyranth War engagement also foreshadowed the arms race between Rislandian airship forces and Wyranth ground-based countermeasures that would continue across later conflicts.
