"A brutal four-year conflict." — A History of Rislandia

Overview

The First Wyranth War was a major armed conflict between Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire, lasting from Year 337 to Year 341. According to A History of Rislandia, the war began when Wyranth forces attacked Pleasant Pass in Year 337 and threatened to push through to the western coast. The conflict claimed approximately 8,000 Rislandian lives and reshaped the military and strategic relationship between the two powers for generations.

Background

The precise causes of the Wyranth offensive are not detailed in A History of Rislandia, which records only that Wyranth forces initiated hostilities by attacking Pleasant Pass in Year 337. The pass represented a critical strategic corridor, and its seizure threatened Rislandia's western coast.

Course of the War

Year 337 — The Wyranth Offensive

Wyranth forces attacked and pushed through Pleasant Pass in Year 337, threatening the western coast of Rislandia. The Battle of Pleasant Pass took place during this opening phase of the war. King Malaky X died of a heart attack during this first year of the conflict, leaving the kingdom in crisis at its most vulnerable moment.

Year 338 — The Rislandian Counteroffensive

King Malaky XI assumed the throne following his predecessor's death and took personal command of Rislandian forces. The Knights of the Crystal Spire played a decisive role in Year 338, destroying Wyranth artillery during the counteroffensive. Despite this success, the campaign ended in a stalemate at Pleasant Pass, with neither side able to achieve a decisive breakthrough.

Year 339 — Naval Campaign

Fighting shifted to the sea in Year 339, with naval battles erupting along the coast. The Wyranth Imperial Navy raided Portsgate, marking one of the war's most significant strikes against Rislandian territory.

Year 340 — Recapture of Pleasant Pass

Rislandian forces retook Pleasant Pass in Year 340, driving Wyranth troops south of the Border River. This advance effectively ended major offensive operations and set the stage for negotiations.

Year 341 — Armistice and Treaty

A treaty was negotiated in Year 341, establishing terms on a status quo ante bellum basis. The agreement included an expanded demilitarized zone at Pleasant Pass, prisoner exchanges, and notably, no reparations from either side. According to A History of Rislandia, this agreement is identified as the Treaty of Lake Bethany, concluded in Year 356.

Casualties

Rislandia suffered approximately 8,000 dead over the course of the war. A History of Rislandia does not record Wyranth casualty figures.

Legacy

The First Wyranth War demonstrated the strategic importance of Pleasant Pass as a contested chokepoint between the two powers. The expanded demilitarized zone established by the peace settlement shaped the border region for years afterward. The war also marked the brief reign of King Malaky X and the rise of King Malaky XI, whose personal battlefield leadership became a defining feature of his reign.
