Westerly Spine
Overview
The Westerly Spine is the tallest and most extensive mountain range in Rislandia, running north-south along the western portion of the Iberanth Peninsula. According to A History of Rislandia, it is described as "a massive mountain range running north-south along the western portion of the kingdom" and "the great mountain range dividing the peninsula." Its peaks remain snow-capped year-round, and the range stretches from the northern coast southward, crossing the Border River and continuing deep into Wyranth Empire territory.
The Westerly Spine creates a fundamental geographic and cultural division between the isolated western coast and the more populous eastern heartland of Rislandia. A narrow coastal strip lies between the mountains and the Golgmarsh Ocean on the western side, and the range is subject to violent storms originating from that ocean. Terrain throughout the range includes towering peaks, narrow valleys, and alpine forests, with snow present at high elevations.
Most of the range is completely impassable due to sheer cliffs, unstable slopes, and treacherous weather. Only two practical routes through or around it are known: Pleasant Pass and the Northern Forest Route.
History
The Crossing of Wyranth Ashenblade (Year 11)
The Westerly Spine first entered recorded history during the early years of Rislandian settlement. In Year 11, Wyranth Ashenblade led his followers south over the Westerly Spine after splitting from Jory Malaky. According to A History of Rislandia, "They crossed the Westerly Spine mountains," marking the founding division between what would become Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire. This crossing established Wyranth control over the southern portions of the range and the lands beyond.
Expeditions of Malaky III (Years 110–127)
The range was systematically explored during the reign of King Malaky III, whose expeditions between Years 110 and 127 surveyed the Westerly Spine in detail. According to A History of Rislandia, these expeditions "Explored the Westerly Spine mountains" and resulted in the discovery of passes and mineral deposits. The knowledge gained during this period informed Rislandia's understanding of the range's geography and resources for generations.
Description
Northern Portion (Rislandian Territory)
The northern portion of the Westerly Spine lies within Rislandian territory and represents the more settled and better-documented section of the range. It connects Rislandia to its western shores via the narrow coastal strip and contains remnants of Giant construction, including crumbling towers and structures of unknown purpose. The presence of these ruins suggests the range was inhabited or traversed during the Age of Giants. The range also contains the Wild Peaks.
The primary industries associated with the northern portion include limited mining, hunting, and military outposts. The mineral deposits identified during Malaky III's expeditions remain among the range's notable resources.
Southern Continuation (Wyranth Territory)
Below the Border River, the Westerly Spine continues through the western portion of the Wyranth Empire. According to A History of Rislandia, this southern continuation is less explored and more wild than its northern counterpart. The Wyranth have fewer settlements in this section than in the northern portion. The terrain remains consistent with the broader range — towering peaks, narrow valleys, and alpine forests — though it is cooler than the surrounding desert regions, with snow at high elevations.
The southern side of the range contains Pleasant Pass, and control of that pass's southern approach is described as vital for Wyranth access to western territories. The southern continuation is also home to dangerous creatures and possibly ancient ruins.
Pleasant Pass and the Northern Forest Route
Only two practical routes through or around the Westerly Spine are known to exist. Pleasant Pass runs through the mountain range and has been the site of significant military activity, including the Battle of Pleasant Pass. The Northern Forest Route represents the second option for traversing the range. The strategic importance of these passages has made them central to conflicts between Rislandia and Wyranth throughout history.
Cultural and Strategic Significance
The Westerly Spine has shaped Rislandian society as much as its politics. The range creates a lasting cultural division between western and eastern Rislandians, with the isolated western coast developing distinct characteristics from the more populous eastern heartland. The violent storms driven in from the Golgmarsh Ocean further reinforce the western coast's separation from the rest of the kingdom.
For the Wyranth Empire, the southern portions of the range serve as both a natural frontier and a strategic asset. Control of Pleasant Pass and its southern approaches determines Wyranth access to western territories, making the range a persistent factor in Rislandian-Wyranth military planning.
