Counter-Serum

The counter-serum was a chemical agent developed by Rhys to neutralize the effects of the Giant's Blood Serum used by the Wyranth Empire, existing in both injectable and aerosolized forms; it was credited as key to Rislandia's victory in the 2nd Wyranth War.

Counter-Serum

The counter-serum (also referred to as the anti-serum, Rhys's concoction, and Rhys's counter-serum) was a chemical agent developed by Rhys to counteract the Giant's Blood Serum employed by the Wyranth Empire. It existed in two related but distinct forms: an injectable compound intended for individual administration, and a bulk aerosolized preparation designed for large-scale battlefield dispersal. Both forms were developed during the events of The Fight For Rislandia and were credited as key to winning the war.

Overview

The counter-serum was produced by Rhys and was derived from the blood of a giant creature. Its primary purpose was to counteract the effects of the Giant's Blood Serum on Wyranth soldiers, curing them of the bloodlust the substance caused, though it also functioned as a cure for those soldiers' withdrawals from that substance. In both its injectable and aerosolized forms, the compound caused affected individuals to lose their will to fight and produced a calming effect. Rhys described the injectable version as actively sending the opposite signal to the affected person in addition to removing the addiction, making it more potent than earlier formulations he had previously provided.

Rhys acknowledged that he required a better laboratory to complete his work on the serum, and aimed to mass-produce it using the Mine Serum Machine, with Harkerpal's team helping to rig the machine to produce it at scale.

Forms

Injectable Counter-Serum

The injectable form of the counter-serum was administered via syringe injected into the neck. It was noted to be more potent than what Rhys had previously given Marina du Willet. In addition to removing addiction to the Giant's Blood Serum, it actively sent the opposite signal to the affected individual. The compound took a few minutes to work and rendered a Wyranth driver a pacifist for two to three days in a documented instance during The Fight For Rislandia.

Aerosolized Anti-Serum

The aerosolized form, also called the anti-serum or referred to colloquially as crop dusting, was designed for mass battlefield application. It was held in a large barrel crate and dispersed via the Anti-Serum Crop Duster mounted on The Liliana. The distribution system was based on how the Nightmen managed their farms, according to Rhys. The substance required a thickening agent to be spread via crop-dusting. When dispersed, it appeared as a dark blue cloud that looked almost like dust.

Only a limited quantity was secured—less than Rhys had hoped—and there was only enough to impact the Wyranth forces for one major battle.

Role in The Fight For Rislandia

In The Fight For Rislandia, Zaira von Monocle ordered Rhys to spray the anti-serum during the approach to battle. It was dispersed from the back of The Liliana as a dark blue cloud. Approximately eighty percent of the supply was sprayed before the ship was hit. The Anti-Serum Crop Duster was mostly destroyed in the subsequent explosion.

The remaining anti-serum was used by coating cannonballs with it, and the rest of the barrel was dumped. When the substance made contact with a giant, it smoldered and smoked on contact before being absorbed into the giant's body, causing the giant to roar in pain and acting as a counter agent against it.

The anti-serum was described as very effective against Wyranth forces, though the twenty-third regiment encountered small bands of soldiers who were not impacted by it. The counter-serum was ultimately credited as key to winning the war. The aerosolized anti-serum could also inadvertently pacify Rislandian soldiers if they were struck by it.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, the counter-serum is referred to primarily as an enzyme treatment, and is also listed under the aliases anti-serum and cure for giant's blood addiction. The sourcebook frames the substance in biochemical terms absent from the novels, stating that the enzyme broke down the bonded serum in the blood cells of affected individuals, thereby freeing them from the giant's influence. This mechanistic explanation — that the enzyme acts directly on blood cells to dissolve the bond formed by the Giant's Blood Serum — does not appear in the novels, which describe the counter-serum's effects in observational rather than physiological terms.

The bible confirms that Rhys developed the treatment and that it successfully treated Marina du Willet's addiction, consistent with the novels. It further states that the anti-serum was distributed within the Wyranth Empire, and that Rhys and Harkerpal together created an anti-serum production device, which corresponds to the Mine Serum Machine as described in the novels.
