Golgmarsh the Giant
Golgmarsh was a giant who featured in a legend passed down through oral tradition, notably told by the mother of Zaira von Monocle. According to the story, his extraordinary ambition and tragic end left a permanent mark upon the world in the form of the Golgmarsh Ocean.
Overview
Golgmarsh was described as a giant consumed by the desire to touch the tip of the sky. As the legend states, "A giant by the name of Golgmarsh wanted to touch the tip of the sky." To achieve this goal, he climbed to the highest peak of the tallest mountain. However, the ground beneath him could not support his immense weight, and he fell from the summit. According to the legend, the impact of his fall created what became known as the Golgmarsh Ocean.
Golgmarsh is associated with the broader lore surrounding The Giants of the world, though his existence is attested only through legend rather than historical record.
Role in For Steam and Country
In For Steam and Country, the legend of Golgmarsh was recounted as a story told to Zaira von Monocle by her mother. The tale served as part of the cultural and mythological background of the world, offering a legendary explanation for the origin of the Golgmarsh Ocean.
In A History of Rislandia
According to A History of Rislandia, Golgmarsh is treated as a figure of legend whose story exists in multiple regional variants, each reflecting the values and beliefs of the culture that preserved it. The sourcebook describes him not as the largest or strongest of the Giants, but explicitly as "the most ambitious" — a distinction the text emphasises as the defining quality of his character.
Character and Motivation
According to A History of Rislandia, Golgmarsh grew jealous of birds for their ability to fly high and grew angry that mountains stood taller than he did. His ambition was to touch the tip of the sky.
The Climb and the Fall
The sourcebook provides considerably more detail about the climb itself than appears in the novels. Golgmarsh spent months ascending the tallest mountain in the land; his hands bled and his feet cracked during the ascent. Upon reaching the summit, his fingers brushed the clouds. The ground beneath him could not support his weight. He fell screaming, his cries echoing across the world. When he struck the earth, the ground shattered for miles, a thunderous boom was heard across the continent, and the earth cracked open, with water spewing forth. The cracks filled with water, forming the Golgmarsh Ocean.
The sourcebook adds that his body was never found. Two explanations are offered: some hold that he was buried so deep he became part of the earth itself; others believe his bones lie at the bottom of the ocean.
Regional Variants
According to A History of Rislandia, the legend of Golgmarsh exists in at least three distinct cultural versions:
Atreblan Version
In the Atreblan telling, Golgmarsh was cursed by Terravon for refusing to honour the earth. This version frames his fall as divine punishment for his hubris toward the land itself.
Wyranth Version
In the Wyranth version, Golgmarsh is recast as a hero who climbed the mountain not out of personal ambition but to steal fire from sky-gods for the benefit of mortals — a markedly different moral valence from the other traditions.
Zenwey Interpretation
Zenwey shamans, according to the sourcebook, take a position distinct from either of the above: they hold that Golgmarsh was a real historical figure, one of the ancient giants who ruled before the Sundering, rather than a purely legendary or mythological being. This connects the legend to the broader history of the Giants and the era preceding The Great Sundering.
