Isle du Mystere

The Isle du Mystere (also informally referred to as Mystery Island) is a southern island under Wyranth Empire control, notable for its volcanic mountain, multi-level settlement, and its role as a hub for automaton production, life crystal exploitation, and Wyranth aerial fleet development.

The island's settlement is built across multiple levels. Along the shoreline, wooden houses on stilts stand over the sands, connected by ropes and wooden bridges. A large dock stretches from these stilted buildings out into the ocean. A higher level of flat ground is accessible via a main ramp and spiral wooden stairs cut into the rock face. The airship construction and docking facilities were located at this upper level. Wyranth gunboats and supply ships were observed docked at the island alongside the new airship under construction.

Zaira von Monocle found the island's name pretentious, remarking that it could simply be called Mystery Island.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, Kade reported having heard that thousands of automatons were being created on the Isle du Mystere—a number described as sufficient to overwhelm all of Rislandia. His exact words were: "I've heard rumblings thousands are being created on the Isle du Mystere in the south."

The island was also referenced by Ivan, the Iron Emperor, who revealed that Wyranth Empire engineers had been developing a new Wyranth aerial fleet there. This next-generation fleet was distinguished from earlier Wyranth airships by its use of a metal frame rather than the traditional wooden construction. Ivan stated: "On the Isle du Mystere, our engineers have been developing a Wyranth aerial fleet."

Additionally, the Isle du Mystere was identified as the location where the Wyranth discovered a cache of life crystals, a find that likely contributed to the island's strategic importance and the scale of automaton production being conducted there.

In A History of Rislandia

According to A History of Rislandia, the Isle du Mystere is described as "one of the most mysterious and dangerous places in the known world" — a large island off the southern coast of the Wyranth Empire, shrouded in legend and danger long before the empire established its industrial presence there.

Geography and Climate

The sourcebook describes the island as a volcanic landmass covered in dense jungle, with a volcanic peak at its center and a rocky coastline. The climate is tropical — hot and humid. This account broadly aligns with the novels' depiction of heavy black lava rock and a towering volcanic mountain, though A History of Rislandia emphasises the dense jungle covering the island's interior, which receives no mention in the existing novel-based description of the settlement and its surroundings.

The bible also specifies that a narrow strait separates the Isle du Mystere from the Wyranth mainland, across which Wyranth ships transport automatons, airships, and other products. The strait is described as treacherous, with strong currents and hidden rocks, but vital to Wyranth logistics. This conflicts with the novel-based account on this page, which states the island is "several hours by ferry from the Wyranth mainland" and implies open sea rather than a narrow strait;

The Fae and Supernatural Phenomena

A significant portion of the sourcebook's account concerns phenomena that the novels do not address. A History of Rislandia records that the island has long been associated with the Fae, noting that "some islands became dominated by Fae rather than humans" — and the Isle du Mystere is counted among these. Sailors report seeing beautiful, otherworldly beings in the jungle, and some whisper that the Wyranth Empire has made a bargain with whatever inhabits the island.

Beyond Fae sightings, the sourcebook catalogues a range of strange phenomena reported by those who have visited or worked on the island:

  • Lights visible moving through the jungle at night
  • Voices heard speaking in unknown languages
  • Time distortions and unexplained disappearances
  • Features of the island that are not always found in the same location — trees appearing to move, paths changing, and travellers becoming hopelessly lost
  • Strange beasts described as "neither animal nor spirit"

These elements are entirely absent from the novels' treatment of the island.

The Isle du Mystere Industrial Complex

According to A History of Rislandia, the Wyranth Empire has established what the sourcebook calls "the most advanced and secretive industrial facility in the empire" on the island's northwestern coast: the Isle du Mystere Industrial Complex. Its recorded functions include:

  • Mining of natural metals, minerals, and crystals — including life crystals drawn from volcanic deposits
  • Mass production of automatons, described as forming "the backbone of the empire's military"
  • Construction of the new Wyranth aerial fleet
  • Development of experimental weapons and technologies

The complex is described as heavily fortified and guarded. Workers are noted to be well-paid, but face constant danger from the jungle; many do not return from their shifts — a detail that connects to the broader supernatural hazards described above. The sourcebook also records that automatons produced on the island have been observed malfunctioning and attacking workers, a detail not present in the novels.

The sourcebook confirms that the automaton forces deployed by the Wyranth were "created using life crystals from Isle du Mystere," and identifies the island as the primary source of life crystals for the empire.

Aliases

A History of Rislandia records the alias "The Mysterious Island" for this location. The novel-based account on this page records the informal alias "Mystery Island" as used by Zaira von Monocle in the novels. These are distinct forms and are not treated as equivalent by the sourcebook.
