King Malaky IX

King Malaky IX, nicknamed 'the Proud,' was the ninth monarch of the Malaky dynasty, reigning from Year 284 to Year 311. He was a nationalist and militarist whose aggressive expansion of Rislandia's armed forces and public insult of Wyranth ambassadors in Year 298 severed diplomatic relations and inaugurated a Cold War between the two powers that lasted until his death.

King Malaky IX

King Malaky IX, epithet the Proud, was the ninth ruler of the Malaky Dynasty and one of the monarchs categorised among the Warrior Kings of Rislandia. He reigned for twenty-seven years, from Year 284 to Year 311, and left a legacy of military expansion, cultural nationalism, and lasting hostility with the Wyranth Empire.

Overview

According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky IX was the son of King Malaky VIII and succeeded him upon the throne. He was described as nationalist, arrogant, militaristic, and charismatic — a combination that made him a commanding figure in court and a polarising one in the wider world. He died at the age of sixty-eight in Year 311 and was succeeded by his son, King Malaky X.

Reign

Military Expansion (Years 285–305)

Among the earliest and most consequential acts of Malaky IX's reign was a massive increase in military spending, sustained across two decades from Year 285 to Year 305. According to A History of Rislandia, this programme doubled the size of the Grand Rislandian Army, expanded the Rislandia Navy through the construction of additional warships, fortified the southern border, and established elite trained units within the armed forces. These measures transformed Rislandia into a significantly more formidable military power during his reign.

Cultural Nationalism (Years 290–310)

Running parallel to his military programme, Malaky IX promoted Rislandian culture as superior to that of all other nations. According to A History of Rislandia, schools during this period taught that Rislandia was the "true heir" of the Orethan Dominion, embedding nationalist ideology into public education across the kingdom. This campaign of cultural promotion continued from Year 290 through Year 310, shaping a generation of Rislandians in the image of the king's convictions.

The Wyranth Incident and the Cold War (Year 298–311)

The defining diplomatic crisis of Malaky IX's reign occurred in Year 298, when he publicly insulted the Wyranth Ambassadorial Delegation, calling them "pretenders and savages." According to A History of Rislandia, this act resulted in the immediate severance of diplomatic relations between Rislandia and the Wyranth Empire. The two nations entered a Cold War that persisted from Year 298 until Malaky IX's death in Year 311, a period of thirteen years during which open conflict was avoided but hostility remained entrenched.

Death and Succession

Malaky IX died in Year 311 at the age of sixty-eight. He was succeeded by his son, who took the throne as King Malaky X.

Legacy

According to A History of Rislandia, Malaky IX is categorised among the Warrior Kings of the Malaky dynasty. His reign reshaped Rislandia's military capacity and national identity, though his confrontational approach to foreign relations — particularly the rupture with Wyranth — cast a long shadow over subsequent reigns. The Cold War he initiated with the Wyranth Empire outlasted him and continued to define the geopolitical landscape of the peninsula in the reigns that followed.
