Metzengerstein Energy Device
The Metzengerstein Energy Device was an experimental energy weapon of considerable destructive power, housed in the laboratory of Dr. Metzengerstein. It was among the most formidable pieces of technology encountered during the events of The Steam Knight, capable of obliterating Wyranth military assets in a single discharge. Its operation, however, carried extreme risk: sustained use caused the device to overheat rapidly, ultimately resulting in a catastrophic explosion.
Description
The Metzengerstein Energy Device existed in two integrated components: a large wall-mounted machine and a handheld or tripod-mounted emitter unit.
Wall-Mounted Machine
The primary power unit was a large machine fixed to the wall of Dr. Metzengerstein's laboratory. It was connected to a steam engine and furnace that supplied the energy necessary to operate the device. When active, the machine's face pulsed with blue light, and hot energy was channelled through a tube to the emitter unit. Under sustained operation, the engine turned red hot and smoke seeped through the pipes, indicating severe thermal stress.
Tripod-Mounted Emitter
The emitter was described as "an oblong shaped piece of metal the size of both of my arms put together, with a small point of metal protruding at the end." It was mounted on a tripod and connected to the wall-mounted steam engine by a hose. The emitter featured a lever and a long trigger on its underside, similar in configuration to a rifle, allowing an operator to aim and fire it. When powered, pulsing energy travelled through the connecting tube to the emitter, which discharged it as a directed beam. The device heated up quickly during operation.
Role in The Steam Knight
In The Steam Knight, the device was discovered in Dr. Metzengerstein's laboratory. When Wyranth forces threatened the location, James Gentry brought the tripod-mounted emitter outside and turned it against the attackers. The weapon demonstrated extraordinary destructive capability: "a beam of energy shot outward, more intense than anything I'd ever seen before," shattering a Wyranth horseless carriage, striking soldiers, and tearing the earth apart.
The sustained discharge proved too great for the device to sustain. The engine turned red hot, smoke seeped through the pipes, and the device ultimately exploded, destroying the entire house in which the laboratory was situated.
