The five short stories set in Rislandia bring in a number of minor characters. Those with a larger role have their own pages: Count Eberle, Knut Monier, Master Sergeant Everett, Thesally, Lieutenant Avery and Private du Skillet. The rest are gathered on this page.
How Baron Von Monocle Named His Airship
Duke Wesley Yount
Duke Wesley Yount controls the mountain castle the story calls Yountdale, one of the largest coal-producing areas in the land. He owes Baron Theodore von Monocle a debt "from years past". Theo lands there to refuel, expecting to collect. Yount is the father of Liliana. By author ruling, Yountdale is High Mesa Castle, where the airship was named.
The unnamed first officer
Theo tells his first officer about an old adventure and reveals that the ship still has no name. This story does not name the officer. In Island of the Fae the first officer is Knut Monier, "who had served with Theo since before there was an airship". The two may be the same man.
Baron Von Monocle and the Island of the Fae
Ensign du Bangle
Ensign du Bangle is the young pilot of the Liliana and has crew-cut hair. Theo orders him to "bring us in easy" as the ship approaches the Fae island.
Private Russell
Private Russell is a young commando, "barely fitting into his uniform". He is the first man to reach the beach, wading through water past his boots. He is later killed by Fae darts.
Eberle's son
Eberle's son is about twelve and has long, brushed brown hair. He is the boy whom his father Count Eberle wanted rescued from the Fae. In the end the boy chooses to remain with the Fae, and Theo tells the count a kinder story.
Tangled Web
The Loveridge barmaid
The barmaid serves drinks in the Loveridge pub where Major Edwin Ral tries to impress the blonde woman who turns out to be Thesally.
The Neverending War
The narrator
The narrator is an unnamed Rislandian infantryman who tells the story in the first person. He marches with the Grand Rislandian Army toward Greenhorne and Loveridge. He admits he "never bothered learning the whole" marching song.
Sgt. Forest
Sgt. Forest was the narrator's sergeant and was killed in "our last assault" before the story opens. The narrator grieves for him on the march.
City Duty
The Nightman assassin
The Nightman assassin is a red-eyed Nightman armed with a dagger. He creeps along the palace roof in Rislandia City, apparently to kill Queen Reina, and attacks James Gentry, cutting his arm. He tells James: "Your people are weak. They will all become our slaves." James burns him with the von Breech jetpack, and the assassin falls from the roof.
Reina's diplomat
Reina's diplomat is an unnamed visitor whom Queen Reina is speaking with when James arrives at her royal chambers: "some diplomat or another, talking as usual".
