The Noble Conspiracy (Year 240)

In Year 240, a group of Rislandian nobles plotted to assassinate King Malaky VII and replace him with his more moderate cousin, but were betrayed and captured. The conspirators were subsequently imprisoned and subjected to the humiliating Edict of Ridicule in Year 241, which forced them to adopt absurd surnames — an act whose consequences echoed through their family lines for generations.

Overview

The Noble Conspiracy of Year 240 was a failed plot by a coalition of Rislandian nobles to assassinate King Malaky VII and install his more moderate cousin on the throne. According to A History of Rislandia, "a group of nobles, horrified by Malaky VII's tyranny, plotted to assassinate him." The conspiracy was undone from within when one of the conspirators betrayed the plot to the king, motivated by fear or greed. The failure of the plot led directly to the imprisonment of its primary architects and, the following year, to the passage of the Edict of Ridicule, one of the more unusual punitive measures in Rislandian legal history.

Background

The conspiracy arose in response to the tyrannical conduct of King Malaky VII during his reign. A number of nobles concluded that the kingdom's welfare required the king's removal and the elevation of a more moderate member of the Malaky Dynasty to the throne. The conspirators coordinated their plot in secret, intending to act decisively before the king could move against them.

The Plot and Its Betrayal

The primary conspirators included Duke Aldric of Greenhorne, Count Theron of Centerpost, and Baron Wilhelm, along with several others whose identities are not fully recorded. The group planned to assassinate King Malaky VII and place his more moderate cousin on the throne in his stead.

Before the plot could be executed, one of the conspirators — whose name A History of Rislandia does not preserve — betrayed the scheme to the king, reportedly driven by fear or greed. The conspirators were arrested and imprisoned in the dungeons of the Crystal Spire.

The Conspirators

Duke Aldric of Greenhorne

Duke Aldric of Greenhorne was one of the primary architects of the conspiracy. Following the plot's failure, he was imprisoned in the dungeons of the Crystal Spire. In Year 241, under the Edict of Ridicule, he was compelled to change his surname to "du Pitchfork." According to A History of Rislandia, "Duke Aldric du Pitchfork became a joke." He remained imprisoned and died in the Crystal Spire's dungeons in Year 243.

Count Theron of Centerpost

Count Theron of Centerpost was likewise a primary conspirator. He was imprisoned in the dungeons of the Crystal Spire following the plot's collapse. The Edict of Ridicule of Year 241 forced him to adopt the surname "von Chamberpot." According to A History of Rislandia, "Count Theron went mad and was released (Year 245), living as a broken man."

Baron Wilhelm

Baron Wilhelm was a primary conspirator and the founding figure of the von Monocle family line. Imprisoned in the dungeons of the Crystal Spire after the conspiracy's failure, he was subjected to the Edict of Ridicule in Year 241, which required him to adopt the surname "von Monocle" — a reference to a single eyeglass, considered an absurd affectation for a nobleman. According to A History of Rislandia, "Baron Wilhelm von Monocle was mocked at every turn." He survived his imprisonment and was released after three years, but never recovered his dignity. His renamed line would persist across the centuries, eventually producing Zaira von Monocle and the Baron of the novels' era.

Aftermath

In Year 241, King Malaky VII issued the Edict of Ridicule, compelling the surviving conspirators to exchange their noble surnames for humiliating replacements as a form of public punishment and lasting social degradation. The measure was effective: the renamed nobles were subjected to widespread mockery, and the stigma attached to their altered family names persisted well beyond their own lifetimes.

The conspiracy and its suppression are also associated with the Purge carried out under Malaky VII's reign, though the precise relationship between these events is not detailed in A History of Rislandia.

Legacy

The Noble Conspiracy's most enduring consequence was the creation of the von Monocle surname itself. What began as a mark of shame imposed upon Baron Wilhelm became the name carried by his descendants across generations, including ultimately by the protagonists of The Adventures of Baron Von Monocle. The von Monocle family thus traces its distinctive name directly to this failed act of political resistance in Year 240.

The fates of the three principal conspirators illustrated the range of outcomes the conspiracy produced: Duke Aldric du Pitchfork died in prison in Year 243; Count Theron von Chamberpot lost his sanity and was released in Year 245 as a broken man; and Baron Wilhelm von Monocle survived imprisonment but never reclaimed his former standing.
