Tyndree Kingdom

The Tyndree Kingdom was a sovereign realm situated on the east coast of Rislandia, northeast of the Wyranth Empire. The kingdom was eventually absorbed into the Wyranth Empire following a war, ceasing to exist as an independent political entity in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign.

Overview

As described in For Steam and Country, the Tyndree Kingdom lay northeast of the Wyranth Empire. The Blood of Giants further places it on the east coast of Rislandia, and The Iron Wedding describes it as lying on the east coast of Rislandia between Wyranth. Beyond its geographic situation, little is recorded of the kingdom's internal governance, culture, or full extent. The presence of High Mesa Castle within its former borders indicates it contained at least one significant noble seat, presided over by a duchess at the time of the war.

In The Fight for Rislandia, Lieutenant Colwell referenced the Tyndree Kingdom in passing, remarking that he wished he had a beach house there—suggesting the kingdom's coastline was known to Rislandian soldiers, even after its dissolution as an independent state.

History

The Tyndree Kingdom was drawn into conflict with the Wyranth Empire, with the battle centered on High Mesa Castle. In the 23rd Year of King Malaky XV's Reign, Baron Theodore von Monocle flew his first mission to Tyndree in connection with this conflict. According to The Blood of Giants, the Tyndree Kingdom formally folded into the Wyranth Empire in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign, at which point it ceased to exist as an independent state and its territory passed under Wyranth control.

In The Iron Wedding, the kingdom is described as having been previously overrun by the Wyranth Empire. The text also notes that Rislandia was unable to provide more help to the people of Tyndree during this period.

Notable Connections

Zaira von Monocle's Mother

In The Iron Wedding, it is established that Liliana von Monocle, the mother of Zaira von Monocle, was originally from the Tyndree Kingdom. Baron Theodore von Monocle helped get Liliana out of Tyndree, an act that would prove consequential to the Von Monocle family history.

Role in For Steam and Country

In For Steam and Country, the Tyndree Kingdom was the destination of Baron Theodore von Monocle's first mission. He was tasked with resupplying the duchess of High Mesa Castle, located within the kingdom's territory. This mission brought him into the broader conflict surrounding Wyranth expansion in the region.

Role in The Blood of Giants

In The Blood of Giants, the Tyndree Kingdom is referenced in a historical context. The text records that Baron Theodore von Monocle flew his ship on its first mission to Tyndree on the east coast of Rislandia in the 23rd Year of King Malaky XV's Reign, with the battle between Wyranth forces taking place at High Mesa Castle. The book also establishes the precise date of the kingdom's dissolution, placing its absorption into the Wyranth Empire in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign.

Role in The Fight for Rislandia

In The Fight for Rislandia, the Tyndree Kingdom was mentioned by Lieutenant Colwell in a lighthearted remark. He stated: "I wish I had a horseless carriage and a pile of gold to fill the back trunk, which I'd take to my beach house in the Tyndree Kingdom." The comment implies that the kingdom's coastal character remained part of Rislandian cultural memory even after its absorption by the Wyranth Empire.

Role in The Iron Wedding

In The Iron Wedding, the Tyndree Kingdom is referenced in a personal and historical context. It is identified as the homeland of Liliana von Monocle, mother of Zaira von Monocle. The kingdom is described as having been previously overrun by the Wyranth Empire, and it is noted that Rislandia was unable to provide more help to its people. Baron Theodore von Monocle's role in extracting Liliana from Tyndree is also mentioned. The book's timeline entries repeat the established facts that Baron Theodore von Monocle's first mission was to Tyndree and that the kingdom folded into the Wyranth Empire in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign.

In A History of Rislandia

A History of Rislandia provides substantial background on the Tyndree Kingdom that goes well beyond what the novels record, covering its founding, golden age, conquest, and legacy under Wyranth rule.

Founding and Origins

According to A History of Rislandia, the Tyndree Kingdom was founded by Tyndri Silverveil and approximately 1,500 followers, who established a realm in the southeastern peninsula of Rislandia. The sourcebook describes it as "a scholarly and artistic realm that would flourish for centuries before Wyranth conquest." The kingdom took its name from its founder.

The Golden Age Under King Aldous III

The sourcebook identifies King Aldous III of Tyndree as the last king of the Tyndree Kingdom, who ruled for 31 years prior to the Wyranth invasion, from Year 436 to Year 467 of the Malaky Dynasty. According to A History of Rislandia, Aldous III transformed the kingdom into a center of art, scholarship, and culture during his reign. The kingdom maintained diplomatic relations with Rislandia, Atrebla, and Perryton, and was known throughout the region for the scholarship and artistry of its people. The sourcebook notes that Tyndree had peaceful relations with Rislandia and only occasional conflicts with Wyranth over borders prior to the final conquest.

The Wyranth-Tyndree War and Earlier Conflicts

According to A History of Rislandia, Tyndree and Wyranth fought the Wyranth-Tyndree War in Years 115–120, which ended in a stalemate. The sourcebook notes that Rislandian nobles wished to support Tyndree during this earlier war due to cultural kinship, though they were ultimately unable to provide sufficient aid—an echo of the situation at the time of the final conquest centuries later.

The Conquest of Tyndree

The novels date the fall of Tyndree to the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's reign, roughly fifteen years before For Steam and Country. A History of Rislandia also describes the Conquest of Tyndree as following a brutal siege, after which the kingdom ceased to exist with the fall of High Mesa Castle. (The bible's own date for the conquest, Year 467 of the Malaky Dynasty about 200 years before the novels, is replaced by the novels' dating.)

The novels establish that the Tyndree Kingdom was absorbed into the Wyranth Empire in the 2nd Year of King Malaky XVI's Reign, which is the canonical date of the conquest and dissolution.

Following the conquest, the sourcebook records that Tyndree lands were redistributed to loyal Wyranth citizens, the nobility was completely dissolved, and Tyndree cultural identity was officially suppressed. Some nobles fled to Rislandia during the conquest.

Liliana von Monocle's Status

The novel-based account on this page describes Liliana von Monocle as a native of the Tyndree Kingdom. A History of Rislandia adds that she was specifically a noblewoman of the Tyndree Kingdom, and refers to Baron Theodore von Monocle's rescue of her there in connection with the Rescue of Duchess Liliana. The sourcebook refers to her as "Duchess Liliana" in this context, indicating she held a ducal title—consistent with the novels' reference to a duchess at High Mesa Castle, though the sourcebook appears to identify that duchess directly as Liliana.

Architecture and Culture

According to A History of Rislandia, Tyndree's original architecture was characterized by white stone, arched windows, and gardens. The sourcebook notes that Tyndree cultural traditions were preserved in the Eastern Port, which had formerly served as the kingdom's capital. Tyndree's cultural influence extended even into Wyranth, where the sourcebook credits it with influencing the Grand Opera House and Imperial Museum.

The Purge and Exiled Clergy

The sourcebook records that during the Purge, some exiled priests and monks fled to Tyndree, among other destinations, indicating that the kingdom served as a refuge for religious exiles from Rislandia at some point in its history.

Post-Conquest Society and the Resistance

According to A History of Rislandia, the situation in former Tyndree territories under Wyranth rule is complex. Tyndree nobles serve the empire while maintaining their heritage, and Tyndree descendants serve in the military, factories, and government. Most citizens have accepted Wyranth rule, though some still practice their old faiths in secret and some descendants make pilgrimages to High Mesa Castle. The garrison at High Mesa Castle is described as a mixed force of Tyndree and Wyranth troops.

However, the sourcebook also records an active resistance dimension: former Tyndree nobles form a significant part of the Wyranth Underground Resistance against Ivan, the Iron Emperor, and resistance cells operate in former Tyndree territories. Notably, A History of Rislandia states that a Tyndree noble claims to possess a weapon capable of destroying the Iron Emperor. Some descendants still dream of independence and the restoration of the kingdom.
