Wyranth Underground Resistance
The Wyranth Underground Resistance was an underground movement dedicated to opposing the rule of Ivan, the Iron Emperor from within the Wyranth Empire. Operating in secrecy, the organization grew from informal house meetings into a structured group with dozens of members, a fortified base of operations, and a record of direct action against the Imperial government.
Overview
The Resistance described its own purpose plainly: "We are the resistance to the Iron Emperor's rule." It operated entirely within Wyranth territory, relying on concealment and limited outside support to sustain itself. The group struggled with meager resources, including difficulty affording aether fuel for lamps, and actively sought supplies, food, bullets, and guns from Rislandia. Wyranth informants worked to root the organization out, though as of the events of The Iron Wedding, its leaders and base of operations remained unknown to Ivan.
History
Founding and Early Growth
The Resistance was founded by Kade, Jacin, and a small circle of supporters. As the group noted, "We've been planning for nearly a year" by the time of its first major public action. The organization began with a handful of people meeting in private houses and gradually expanded into a larger body numbering dozens of members.
Establishment of the Underground Base
As the group grew, it relocated its operations to a buried ancient prison beneath the Wyranth capital. The facility served as both a dormitory and a command center, with two levels of cells used for housing members. Guards were posted on the second level, positioned to point rifles downward over the interior. Access to the base required navigating the sewer system and passing through a dug-out circular corridor secured by a metal vault door with a combination lock.
Role in The Iron Wedding
The Wyranth Capital Riot
In The Iron Wedding, the Resistance organized its first public action: a riot in the industrial district of the Wyranth capital, timed to coincide with a moment when Ivan, the Iron Emperor would be present. During the riot, the group also kidnapped Zaira von Monocle. Ivan came to believe the Resistance intended the action as a martyrdom operation designed to spread a disinformation campaign about his tyranny.
Contact with Zaira von Monocle
The Resistance had contact with Zaira von Monocle, who was taken during the Wyranth Capital Riot.
Encampment at Carnait Cove
In The Iron Wedding, the Resistance set up an encampment beyond the walls of Carnait Cove overnight. Approximately fifty fighters comprised the first wave of this action. The group did not know how to fight automatons and fired guns helplessly at the mechanized units; when mecha suits arrived, the fighters scattered and fled.
Ivan's Awareness and Response
Ivan suspected that an assassin aboard the W.S.S. Adventurer was a member of the Resistance. He planned to capture members of the group in order to extract information about its leadership and base of operations, both of which remained unknown to him throughout the events of The Iron Wedding.
Plans Against the Wyranth Palace
The Resistance held plans to create chaos at the Wyranth Palace in the near future, though the execution of this plan was not depicted within The Iron Wedding.
Organization and Resources
The Resistance operated with limited means. Its base in the buried prison provided shelter for dozens of members across two levels of cells. The group lacked sufficient funds for basic supplies such as aether fuel and actively sought material support from Rislandia. Despite these constraints, it maintained an armed membership and was capable of coordinating public actions such as riots and armed encampments.
Key Members
Kade
Kade was one of the founders of the Resistance, part of the original small circle that established the organization.
Jacin
Jacin was one of the founders of the Resistance alongside Kade, helping to build the group from its earliest house meetings.
Relationships
- Ivan, the Iron Emperor: The Resistance existed in direct opposition to Ivan's rule. Ivan was aware of the group's existence as an armed faction but did not know the identities of its leaders or the location of its base.
- Zaira von Monocle: The Resistance had contact with Zaira and kidnapped her during the Wyranth Capital Riot.
- Rislandia: The Resistance sought supplies, food, bullets, and guns from Rislandia, indicating an interest in outside support.
- W.S.S. Adventurer: Ivan suspected a member of the Resistance was responsible for an assassination attempt aboard the vessel.
In A History of Rislandia
A History of Rislandia lists the Resistance as a notable faction of Areth, treating it as a subject of historical and political analysis rather than a narrative account. The sourcebook's treatment is substantially broader than the novels' depiction, adding ideological context, membership composition, tactical methods, and a longer historical arc.
Origins and Historical Development
The Resistance was founded by Kade and Jacin with a small circle of supporters, who had been planning for nearly a year during Ivan, the Iron Emperor's reign. It is not a long-standing movement with roots in an earlier period of Wyranth imperial history.
Membership Composition
The sourcebook describes the Resistance's membership in considerably more detail than the novels. According to A History of Rislandia, its members include former Tyndree nobles—described as forming a significant part of the organization—alongside disaffected workers, intellectuals, military deserters, and idealists. The sourcebook notes that some cells operate in the Wyranth capital while others are active in former Tyndree territories, indicating a geographically distributed cell structure.
Ideology and Stated Goals
According to A History of Rislandia, the Resistance holds several distinct political positions:
- It seeks to overthrow the Emperor and replace the monarchy with a republic or council form of government.
- It advocates for workers' rights, Tyndree independence, and an end to conscription.
- It opposes the centralization of power under the Iron Emperor.
- It opposes the use of the giant's blood serum.
- It opposes the conquest of Tyndree and other territories.
- It sometimes employs religious language in opposition to the imperial state.
The sourcebook also notes that the Resistance opposes cooperation with Rislandia, describing the alliance between Rislandia and Wyranth as deeply unpopular among its members, who view it as a betrayal.
Methods
According to A History of Rislandia, the Resistance's tactics include sabotage, the spreading of propaganda, assassination of imperial officials, strikes, espionage, and occasional uprisings. The sourcebook explicitly states that the Resistance uses terrorism, offering as an illustrative example a member planning a suicide bombing—specifically, a plot to bomb the Wyranth Opera House during the Emperor's attendance. The sourcebook also notes that the Resistance plans to assassinate the Iron Emperor.
