Cliffside Castle
Cliffside Castle is a massive fortress built into the coastal cliffs of northeastern Rislandia, situated on the Areth continent above the ocean. One of Rislandia's most strategically important military installations, the castle served as the primary rallying point for the Grand Rislandian Army and as a refuge for civilians displaced by war. The settlement surrounding the castle had sprawled well beyond its original walls by the time of the Second Wyranth War.
Description
Cliffside Castle takes its name from the dramatic cliffs into which it is built, which are visible from the sea as one approaches by air or water. The castle is constructed of elegant stone polished by the saltwater air to a smooth, shiny surface, and features twin towers. Its interior hallways are described as barren, old, and worn, with no decoration. Notable interior spaces include a small chamber furnished with chairs, a round table, maps, and a gas lamp—used for military planning—as well as baths on the first floor and winding stone and spiral staircases throughout.
Below the castle, a port sits at the base of the cliffs, accessible via long stairs and ramps winding up the cliffside. The castle also contains a town hospital and barracks, and its grounds include refugee camps during wartime. By the events of The Fight for Rislandia, the settlement had expanded beyond the original castle walls, and the streets within were populated enough that crowds could gather to witness departures.
Strategic Role
Cliffside Castle functioned as the current rallying point for the Grand Rislandian Army during the Wyranth invasion depicted in The Fight for Rislandia. It was designated as a fallback position in the event that Rislandia City fell to enemy forces. The bulk of Rislandia's civilian population was evacuated there during the conflict. At its peak military occupation, the castle housed perhaps as many as two hundred military officers, in addition to thousands of refugees from across Rislandia, including those displaced from Portsgate and other destroyed towns.
Dr. Estrella du Clockhand had to attend to the wounded on the battlefield between Cliffside Castle and Rislandia City, indicating the castle's position relative to the front lines of the conflict.
Role in The Fight for Rislandia
In The Fight for Rislandia, Cliffside Castle served as the primary base of operations for the von Monocle family and the Rislandian military leadership. Baron Theodore von Monocle commanded the defense of Rislandia from the castle, and Talyen von Cravat gave birth to baby Lilly von Monocle within its walls. Theodore, Talyen, and Lilly were all staying at the castle during this period.
Zaira von Monocle was given a room in one of the castle's towers. Her father ushered her back downstairs and to the castle exit on at least one occasion. Zaira later departed the castle to return to her ship, and during a speech delivered from The Liliana's deck, she pointed toward the castle from the air. The Liliana lifted off from Cliffside Castle, and people in the streets cheered as it took off. As the airship ascended, the castle faded from view, eventually becoming, as described in the text, "nothing but a speck in our field of vision."
Rhys returned to Cliffside Castle after a crash to rest and recover, the castle being described as a more suitable environment for his recuperation.

In A History of Rislandia
A History of Rislandia refers to Cliffside Castle by the alternate name "The Northeastern Fortress" and characterises it in broad terms as "a massive fortress built into the coastal cliffs, designed to defend against naval invasions." The sourcebook adds several structural and operational details not found in the novels.
Geography and Orientation
According to A History of Rislandia, Cliffside Castle overlooks Lantern Bay, identifying the specific body of water the fortress faces. The novel-based account on this page describes the castle's location only as the northeastern coast above the ocean; the sourcebook's specification of Lantern Bay is an addition rather than a contradiction, though it does introduce a slight tension with the novel-based account on this page's description of the port below as facing open ocean (see Conflicts).
Physical Layout
The sourcebook describes the fortress as having multiple levels equipped with cannons overlooking the bay, along with dedicated barracks, an armory, a command center, and hospital facilities. It also notes a natural harbor below the fortress containing docks for both military and civilian ships, as well as shipyards capable of carrying out repairs. These details expand upon the novel-based account on this page's mention of a port at the base of the cliffs.
The sourcebook further records that during wartime the castle grounds included a refugee camp with temporary shelters, a food distribution center, and medical tents—supplementing the novel-based account on this page's reference to refugee camps in general terms.
Historical Role
According to A History of Rislandia, General Theodore von Monocle commanded the defense of Rislandia from Cliffside Castle during Years 19–20 of the Rislandian calendar, framing the events of the Second Wyranth War within the in-universe scholarly chronology. The sourcebook also states that Talyen von Cravat was evacuated to the castle for her safety—a characterisation that differs subtly from the novel-based account on this page, which does not specify that her presence was the result of a formal evacuation (see Conflicts).
The sourcebook confirms that thousands of refugees from Portsgate and other destroyed towns sheltered at the castle, and that Lilly von Monocle was born within its walls, consistent with the novel-based account on this page.
Current Status
According to A History of Rislandia, at the time of writing the castle is still housing refugees, though their numbers are decreasing. Military operations continue, and the port below is described as busy with trade and naval patrols. The sourcebook notes that food shortages remain a constant concern—a detail absent from the novel-based account on this page's account of the castle's status.
